what's good to get

the 002 rack + a mackie baby HUI

or just the 002 stand-alone system?

I'd suggest you consider the value of the plugs that are included with the 002 (but not with 002 Rack), specifically Maxim, SampleTank SE, and Amplitube. If these are things you'd end up buying, they have a real value of several hundred dollars.

baby HUI is overpriced. it can't control plug-ins, ...and there are many other frustrations.

tele_player is right; the bundled plugs of the 002 need to be given thought to.

You can better look for the Mackie Control. It has far more knobs than the 002. The 002 rack + Mackie Control is about the same price as the 002.
