Because you have a support plan.

Does anyone have a price (and a link) to either the support plan or to just buy the 4.6 upgrade for the S3LX? You would think AVID would make it easier to get this!!

Unfortunately it’s not simple. S3L was sold at a time wherein customer records and sales weren’t managed in a manner that makes it simple to deposit updates to specific users but not all, and as a result the support team is manually depositing this to a lot of users, and it can take time for it to get to everyone.

But if you believe you’re eligible for the update and haven’t received it, contact support and they will square you away ASAP.

Since this becomes a paid update for many of us, maybe some of you involved with the beta could elaborate a bit on what you get in it? I personally find the info on Avids site a bit vague..

If I remember correctly.... with Avid being a publicly traded company, Sarbanes-Oxley applies which means they are legally required to charge for updates. This came up when we were first dealing with updates for the D-Show back in '06 - '07. I think they tried to "remedy" the situation by offering Support Plans so that customers felt like they were at least getting something of value rather than paying $149.00 for an update. Not sure what this update is going to cost, I'm just going off of memory. That being said, I also remember the Avid staff being as frustrated having to charge us as we were with having to pay it. It's not like that amount was going to come close to covering the cost of updating and testing the new code, but as it is an SEC requirement.... kinda is what it is. Again, if my memory serves me.

I understand all that, but I don’t have a support contract, and I have been waiting for years for this update. The iPad app looks great. You said it is available to buy without a contract? Where? How much? When? I have my wallet ready! Take my money please!
