Default firewire hard drive / seek time

hi all.

should i be concerned with the "ms seek time" when shopping for a hard disk? i know i need a 7200 rpm, but don't know whether there is a meaningful difference between 8.5ms and 11ms when using ptle. any help is appreciated. thanks and have a great night.

The smaller the number for seek time the better, but in general any 7200rpm drive should be fine. Most of them have a seek time around 9ms which is plenty. Just make sure the firewire enclosure uses the Oxford911 chipset, or you'll be out of luck using it with PTLE.

The cache on the hard drive will make a big difference. You get much better performance from 8Mb cache HD's.

Having tried all the major brands, we've settled on using the WD Caviar 8mb cache drives for speed, and the IBM/Hitachi 8mb cache drives for quietness. Both perform excellent, the WD is as noted very fast, the IBM/HIT not far behind it, but a ton quieter.
