Crossgrade from M-Powered 8 to 12
Hello,
I've been using Pro Tools M-Powered 8 for years now on a couple of laptops, with a red 1st gen iLok. Now, I've got a new computer (iMac) and one of my classes requires Pro Tools 12 (and they have given me an iLok 3). From this link I see I can upgrade/crossgrade to 12 from MP8 for $99 http://www.avid.com/pro-tools/how-to-buy#show-1. My concern, however, is that I must surrender my license to upgrade. I've still got a few unfinished projects on MP8 and I don't want to lose access to them; would surrendering my license for MP8 mean I could no longer open it on my laptop? I see in this link (https://shop.avid.com/ccrz__ProductD...03&&store=shop) that the upgrade comes with a license for Pro Tools 10 and 12, so would I be able to open my MP8 files in 10? I apologize if this appears as a novice or redundant question, I just want to be as clear as possible so I don't make any unchangeable mistakes. If you have any advice or input, please let me know. Thanks! |

Re: Crossgrade from M-Powered 8 to 12
You'll still be able to open your PT8 sessions in PT12. However you'll have to make sure that there are AAX versions of any of the plugins you're using as the RTAS versions that PT8 use are not compatible with PT12. A lot of companies had free upgrades to AAX, other where paid.

Crossgrade from M-Powered 8 to 12
Surrendering the license means you can't run Pro Tools 8MP ever again.
what pressing life threatening issue is making you want to upgrade that system now? This is a huge upgrade. If you literally are in the middle of working on several tracks then *don't* upgrade. Or just go buy or rent for a few months a full stand alone license so you can keep using what you have. Install on separate computers or separate boot drives/partitions. What/why are you trying to achieve here by upgrading stuff? There may be other options like moving to Pro Tools 10 that let you keep using RTAS plugins. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Re: Crossgrade from M-Powered 8 to 12
Thank you both for the response! I'm taking a class that's going to be using PT12, and with a new machine as well, I thought it might be a good time to update (and gaining more mobility moving away from M-Powered would be nice.) That was before I realized I needed to surrender my license for MP8.
The crossgrade option mentions coming with a license for PT10 and 12, so that must be for RTAS compatibility reasons. Most of my unfinished projects are using stock plugins like Xpand2! and various EQ, compression, etc.; would they transition smoothly from MP8 to 10? It seems like there's a good choice of options, but it may be safest to rent until wrapping some things up and doing a full upgrade then. |

Re: Crossgrade from M-Powered 8 to 12
You can find Pro Tools 8 M-Powered for sale on Ebay and Craigslist for $35-$50. If I could find my Old iLok 1s I might be able to find a Pro Tools 8 M-Powered License you could have.

Re: Crossgrade from M-Powered 8 to 12
Oh wow, that's super generous, thank you for thought alone! I believe I have one more install from my MP8 CD, so finding another license would be a potentially good option. Thanks again, I'll keep my eye out.
