Default Annoyance - Buffer, Interrupts Error

Very often, when first opening a session and going to play it I get the "interrupts held off too long, if this happens often increase buffer size blah blah blah" error. Then, I open the dialog box for the buffer, it's set at 128 initially... I change it to 256(or 512, or 1024), then back to 128, click OK, and I don't get the error anymore. Plays fine after that. Why would this keep happening? Thanks,
Kip

USB is enabled, but no devices are usually plugged in except an external powered USB hub. (I keep it active for memory stick transfers).

You should start with the steps in the Win XP/ Pro Tools 6.x/7.x General Troubleshooting thread and post specific info on your system per the info on that thread if you're unable to resolve the problem.

Also, we need to know the error numbers in the messages you're getting.

For what it's worth, I get this very same error message, and the fix is to change the buffer level, then change it back. After I do that, the error goes away. Doesn't really bug me when I'm mixing, but it's kind of annoying when I'm tracking. If I remember, before I start working, I open up the hardware panel, change the buffer settings, then change 'em back again and the problem goes away as long as PT is open. Very strange...I've got two computers running Win XP Pro, Digi 002, PT7, and they both have this strange error...and the fix is the same. I've built the computers to the Allenstein specs, and I've done all the necessary tweaks. It's a strange thing. Other than this issue, the program runs perfectly. Any others with the same issue??

Jaxman,

Once you start pro tools, and do the little workaround/trick, does it EVER happen again as long as you still have pro tools open? So far it's been that way with me, but I haven't done any intense sessioning yet with it.

Hey Kip,

Once I do the trick..it never happens again, so long as PT is open. The drag is that I have to switch client hardrives during the course of a day which requires a computer shutdown and reboot..so I'm doing this workaround trick 2 or 3 times a day. But...compared to some of the other digi issues I've had in the past, this one is no problem...I can deal with it. I'd just like to know why it's happening in the first place! I've recently built a 002r setup for a client and this buffer issue came up. I showed him the workaround / trick and he asked me why this was necessary. All I could sheepishly say was "it's just a digi thing..." It was kinda embarrassing...I'd like to know of a permanent fix.

JJ,
I totally know what you're saying. I haven't done any work for anyone else since I've upgraded to 6.4, but it seems ridiculous that Digidesign has so many hardware issues with the LE software. It's like, a simple workaround, but you know, you drop all this money on a system, and you have to be constantly reminded that it's buggy. Always makes me nervous like... "what kinda quirk with no solution/reason am I going to find next?"

If you happen upon anything, please share it. I'll do the same. I keep thinking there MUST be a way to stop this. Some minor conflict, some setting somewhere, but then again, maybe there's just NOTHING we can do aside from switch software. haha. Good luck!

Has this ever been resolved? I have the same problem. I'm going to try your workaround tonight.

Well I tried the trick of changing the buffer size and then changing it back but it didn't work for me. The error I get (-9092) "The operating system held off interrupts......"

If anyone has any info on how to solve this please let me know.

Is anyone from Digidesign monitoring this forum?

As I search, this seems to be a very common issue.
