Default Anyway to trigger MIDI through your laptop keyboard

So say I'm sitting there and dont have my midi controller, how do I play midi through my laptop keyboard if I'm trying to program a synth or something? Hard to do without having some sort of way to play a keyboard. Besides penciling in a motif but I like having more flexibility of what I'm playing when I'm programming a sound.

Can you even do it in PT11?

You need a third party piece of software that can emulate a MIDI keyboard. e.g. http://sourceforge.net/projects/vmpk/. It will likely quickly become worth buying a small portable MIDI keyboard.

I downloaded the program but it crashes on every launch. Is there anything else to install other than VMPK?

Simple solution that uses stuff you already have (but you need to be working inside PT and not doing a standalone with the vi):
Create an Instrument track and play in or manually enter a bunch of notes. Save that as a template for when you want to work on synth patches. Use loop mode in PT as needed. Done.

Of course, its just not as flexible so I figured id check if it was the only way or not. Seems to be aside from downloading more 3rd party stuff.
