Default Pt 2018.7 can't import video or open a session with video in it

So I just downloaded PT 2018.7, and am running on MacOS 10.13.6, and now can't import video or open a session with video in it.

Be aware.

Previous to today, the version of PT 2018 I had(the one before .7), and OS 10.13.16 was rock steady and stable.

Make sure the video engine is active in the settings.

We had some pretty bad issues with file corruption and Nexis with 2018.7. No video issues though. We have rolled back to 2018.3 and all is well with the world again.

From what I understand, the next release is a couple of weeks away.

What video card/ Driver are you using?

Is PT giving you an error or just quitting? If its an error, what's it say?

What type of video file/CODEC are you using?

What kind of Mac are you using?

I'm not saying that I can help you if you answer these questions but someone else might be able to.

AFAIK PT is not compatible with 10.13.6. At the moment 10.13.3 is maximum for a supported OS. They warned about issues with 10.13.4 too.

Big red warnings about these Versions...

Sorry for the delay in replying.

I've used the latest version of MacOS with video in the recent past with no issues or problems... I've got tons of older sessions with various video formats, now, none of which will open.

I guess it could be something with the latest OS update, but something that was working fine, is now not working.

Exploring my options...

I actually just updated to 10.13.6. I was on Yosemite(!) with 12.4. I didn't mind being behind on the OS but I wanted to update PT. I usually follow Avid's recommendation but there is a long thread in the 2018 forum about success with 10.13.6. So I took the plunge, although I have my Yosemite drive ready to go if anything is amiss.

So far I haven't had time for much testing but I loaded a few projects including a 30 minute show and no problems. I've got another 30 minute episode next week so I'll give it a workout before a film project in a few weeks.

FYI : 12-core Westmere cheesegrater, 24GB RAM, ATI 5870

Hey Will

Just curious... are you on PT Ultimate? Do you have HDX?

Hi Jeffrey,

PT Ultimate running native.

I realized I forgot to test for drifting. I have an older Blackmagic card so I'll need to check the driver version and see how it performs. That was always a hit or miss processs. Need to go back to Aja one of these days.

OK so

This whole episode started with a client wanting us to install some media encryption software for an ADR job, but as much as everyone tried, we could never get it to work, so the client just sent unencrypted files. The problem was after we installed the software, startups and shut downs took a LOT longer. I did run the un-installer that came with the software, but I'm not at all convinced it got it all.

While I have a clone of my working OS Drive, and I have booted into it, I don't recall that I've ever tried to launch the Video Engine from that backup drive... Bottom line is I wanted to completely erase my internal SSD Drive, and use CCC to copy the "clone" back to the SSD. Somewhere along the line, I got a pop up about different disc formats, so re-formatted the internal SSD to Case Sensitive, and that was the root of all the problems that followed.

Although PT would work, the Video Engine would not.

In order to get everything back to normal, I started over on the SSD, used the same (wrong) format, installed 10.13.1, upgraded to 10.13.3, installed PT 2018-4, but still no Video Joy.

I finally realized my mistake, checked online about Avid's preferred disc format, got that part right, used CCC and cloned my back up drive to the SSD ignoring the different format warning, and now all is working again.

While I know Avid doesn't support this combination, for me, this combination seems to working just fine.

MacOS 10.13.6
PT 2018-7 (ProTools Ultimate/HDX)

So what I thought was an OS issue, really was a disc format issue.

And for the record, at home, my drive is formatted with the new "APFS" format, running 10.13.6, PT 2018-7, and all seems just fine, including video play back.
