I'm using a 002R with my powerbook 1.33/768ram and using 99% cpu, I get about 25 plugs on 20 tracks mono audio and 8 busses. If you need more than that get a desktop with dual proc if you can afford it...
BTW, I'm really happy with my PB, its all a question of needs, I mix projects with less than 24 tracks...

good luck,

Excellent!

JFREAK, on the 1.5Ghz PB (at least the 15") the FW ports are definitely not "connected to the system controller 100% same way than the pcmcia buss."
Did you check the HW documentation at Apple?

I won't comment on any performance difference which this may cause.
http://developer.apple.com/documenta...H206-TPXREF102

from that document you can clearly see that both pci & firewire busses are connected to the very same i/o device controller. and from the same picture you can see why people recommend turning airport off when running protools

well, granted, it's not 100% same way if one is called "firewire phy" and another "cardbus bridge", but that doesn't matter - the point is nothing is between them and the controller.

Ah sorry, didn't know they made it harder in the Aluminum Powerbooks, it was a breeze with my old TiBook.
actually, it's hard in every other apple laptop model - it's only the titanium powerbook that has been made easy to change hard drives. no wonder all unix geeks love 'em

I have a dell right now, but I want to make the switch.
then make the switch! you'll be happy after you have got used to the new and more stable system.

How will the 1.5 PB perform with say 20 or so tracks, a couple of waves c4's, 4 or 5 digi compressors, a dverb and a rverb, a waves eq or 2? I'm just looking for a general answer.
bottom line: you will be ok.

i have a 1.25GHz powerbook and often do such a live project that involves FOH mixing, monitor mixing and recording all at once. i take 16 inputs, give 4-8 outputs, use external reverb via spdif i/o and usually have like:
- 10-12 URS eq's
- 5-8 focusrite D3 comps
- 4-5 bombfactory 1776 limiters
- 2 McDSP multiband comps
- some PSP plugs

i have to leave a good cpu headroom since i cannot afford a hiccup in a live situation. i don't use waves' stuff much, but from my experience from using a lot of other plugs i would say you should be able to do what you described. i believe the C4 pretty much equals to the mcdsp multiband (cpu-wise) and if there's a difference, the focusrite/urs stuff should tax cpu more than waves' stuff. that's however nothing more than a feeling.

if you want to make your system more efficient, use an external reverb. even the cheapo t.c. m300 sounds nicer than most plugin reverbs and it has 0% cpu tax

wow,

Perfect setting:
Small private VIP venue (75 capa) with UPA kit, midas board, plenty standard outboard (dbx, bss, tc verbs...)
Band: rock, guitar driven 4 piece combo with good sources and stage experience. 1st time for me as I was subing the main guy...

Tried the waves L2 on the mix but was not appropriate as I had plenty of headroom and did not need volume.
Also, the vintage warmer was nice on the vox group, added nice upper harmonics, (dpr 404 de-esser took care of the 6k...)

Then switched the l2 for the BF76 (I know...) and it f8@# rocked!!
Fast attack, fast release... super nice gain riding with great tone, tight low end...

Buffer setting: 128 samples, almost unnoticeable latency.

The manager flipped,
the band flipped,
the house engineer flipped,
I flipped!

Only snag: The plugs did the riding, at one point I was telling myself, wait a minute, I'm not mixing anymore...!

Seriously, the only glitch I see is that damn 1394a port on my powerbook is not latched and the firewire can get unplugged...
Very nasty so taped it good.

I'm thinking about getting a cardbus to 1394a and use the 1394b port on my pb for the external drive. That way I'd have the 002r on the pci bus separated from the firewire bus who would be dedidated to the drive. Good idea right? Now, is there such a thing as a carbus to 1394a adapter that locks or latches the firewire connector??
Lets just say it would reassure me a tad...

All in all, it was a good experience and I played safe with only two plugs inserted on vox group and mix. I will expand on this though...

Woohoo, just won an hitachi travelstar 7200rpm on E-bay...150$
Speed? Bring it on!
