Default Thoughts on FMR Audio\'s RNC

I'm looking to purchase 2 channels of outboard compression. I would like to spend about $300 - $400 unless there are dramatic improvements in quality for a little more money. I've heard pretty good thing about the RNC. What do you guys think? Any other options I might look at? Thanks!

Kyle

All I've heard is that it's the best compressor for under $1000...

I can't think of a better compressor in your price range. I have several other compressors that I prefer, but most of them cost a lot more. The only units that I have in it's price range that I actually use are my old dbx 160XT's and a Joemeek. And I only use those because of their coloration. Neither are as precise as an RNC.

Absolutely love it. Clean and transparent, yet does the job. Tremendous value.

Just to warn you, it's a stereo compressor, not two channel mutiple mono.

So if you have two mics on the same drum, for instance, you can use both sides.

You can't use it to simultaneously compress a vocal on one side and a drum on the other side. (You can, but the vocal will compress when the drum hits loud or the drum will compress when the vocal hits a spike - not a good idea).

But they go for $175 new on ebay, shipping included, so for $350, you can get two.

My two cents.

Hope this helps!

Another thing to note is that the RNC has unbalanced I/O.

if you link them with an RNP it'll balance them.

I have two RNC's. They're pretty nice compressors. I don't use them that much though.

Hmm... not too stoked about the concept of stereo vs. multiple mono. What if I raised my price range? Any new rcommendation if I could get up in the $500 range?

What are the downsides of unbalanced I/O?

How does the RNP sound? How does it compare to the 002 pre's? I'm not really interested in adding anything that isn't better than what I already have.

Thanks!

Well, back to your original request.

"I'm looking to purchase 2 channels of outboard compression."

If you're looking for 2 true channels of outboard in your price range, buying two RNC's would be your best bet, IMHO.

I heard about the unbalanced talk with the RNC, but I've been using mine and I hear no drawbacks with the unbalanced lines.

The RNP is generally regarded as a "good preamp." It's just that it's not the fantastic deal that the RNC is.

The RNC is just one of those deals that delivers the goods at a fantastic (almost unbelievable) price.
(Note: I'm not a sales representative for musical goods of any kind).

Anyway, good luck on your search.

I'm actually thinking of selling my RNC/RNP combo. It has the rack adapter as well. If you're interested email me at [email protected]

Thanks,
matt

if thats your price range, i dont think youll find anything better. i have 3 of them and am really happy with them. besides if you decide to upgrade some day, you'll always have them to use on something.
