I installed it on a new Macbook Pro, mid 2015 version that comes with El Cap. It opens and runs. However I could only test it with the Mac's built in microphone because the MBox 3 is not supported yet.
So, I would go over all the install steps carefully and try again.Make sure your Mac is supported too.But if it installed El Cap you souls think it should.

Well, at least we have an official answer. I do hope we do not have to wait much longer. Compatibility would be a nice XMAS present from AVID. But I have already decided to subscribe to the full version of PT12 as soon as the Mbox3 driver is published. Not being able to group tracks is just too essential to workflow. So is running 3rd party plug-ins like L2007.

I am currently running OSX El Capitan with Pro Tools First. It's working great.
I have not yet hooked up my interface but I have imported audio tracks from another pro tools 8 session (you can't upload a session in PTF) and I have used my M-Audio USB midi controller keyboard with no issues.
