Listenback/Talkback. Auto sending an tone when recording.

I'm looking to create an automatic listenback solution so that I can listen to whomever is recording while they are in between takes. From what I've read, a popular method was to take a SMPTE timecode and key a compressor or gate. This would auto mute a microphone when recording.

While I don't have a SyncIO (and can't generate an SMPTE timecode) I was wondering if I can generate a tone from the Signal Generator plugin just when recording (not playing, or just record enabled).

So I guess I'm asking if someone knows how to automatically send a tone out through a channel only when recording.

Any other suggestions that would tackle this problem would also be helpful.

Make a selection on a new track - for the length of the track or region you plan to record -- use the Signal Generator Audio Suite plug-in and create a region of tone... use that for your gate trigger.

At the risk of sounding dense, are you suggesting that I pre-record the tone ("create a region of tone") for the length of the track/region that I plan to record?

Yes - that's the way we would have had SMPTE on track 24 on an analog reel. Now when you hit play - the tone plays back, when you hit stop it doesn't.. use that to open/close/duck your talkback.
