Doesn't that depend on what specific ssd you're using? Samsung 850/860 types don't need the card you're talking about. NVME types need that card for full speed.

What's the point in PCI-e adapter card if you don't go for full speed NVMe storage? Wasn't the original question how to enhance performance

The OP specifically mentioned CPU-hogging Acustica plugins, for those your priority should be to upgrade the CPU(s) and then RAM....

Sure.. as it is already 5,1 swapping processors is pretty easy

The point is expense. OP didn't say how much he was willing to spend or if he wanted to use stuff he already had. It's one thing to spec high end parts with their concomitant price or running on a budget is something else. For me I don't need full-out speed. Not everyone does.

regarding SSD speeds:

I had a MP 2008 3.1, w/SSD and spinners in the drive bays. I bought a relatively cheap Sonnet PCIe adapter and two OWC Extreme Pro 6G SSD to put on it. One for OS/apps, and one for sessions.

The difference was amazing; fast booting, launching of apps, opening sessions, loading plugins. Even UI windows and such was snappier.

I mesured the read/write speeds to appx. 500mb/s. I know you can get much faster, but that did A LOT for my old mac pro.

Just sayin'.
And it didn't cost much either.

That's about the speeds I'm getting with my Samsungs 850 & 860 on OWC Accelsior pcie cards. One is my system drive and the other for samples. Like you said - speed on a budget.
