Default Mouse / optional buttons in PT

I have a trackball on my non audio PC that has some assignable buttons.
I have one set to COPY, the other to PASTE.

Would this work within pro tools to help speed up editing?

It should. But the best use of a programmable button I've found is ctrl+= to toggle the mix/edit windows. Once you've used it you can never go back!

I wish I could find a way to make the scroll wheel move the selection up or down a track like the up and down on a HUI or the 002. Then the button of the wheel could be ctrl, so holding it down and pressing c or v would be my copy or paste command.

no doubt about that. I dont know about everyone else, and it may just be my monitor, but i can only see about 80% of my tracks (top or bottom) when i am in mix mode, where i spend much of my time.
I instinctively finger the scroll wheel to see the top of bottom and it doesnt work. If anyone can figure out how to do that I certainly would appreciate it.

I just tried it and yes it works

Mr_Seven, How did you get ctrl + = stored.

I'm using a Microsoft optical trackball and I have 3 programmable buttons. I have two set up for copy and paste and would like the other as you have it.

The software only let's you select specific commands and does not seem to let you insert your own.
What mouse are you using?

Sorry stone, not quite what I meant. On the Hui and 002, if you hit the up or down arrow in the right mode, it actually moves the selected area up or down, not the selection itself, but just the area or cursor or in/out times, whatever you want to call it. I haven't been able to find a keyboard shortcut to do this yet. Just one instance where the control surface is a big help. I use it extensively for comping together multiple takes without accidentally shifting sections left or right. But you're absolutely right about the normal scroll wheel operation of scrolling down/up a page. Why isn't this inherent in the operation of pro-tools?

Yeah, if the scroll wheel worked on the mix page that would be great. And how about it working the other way in the edit screen, so you can move up and down your song.

Another thing I find annoying about the mix screen is the track/channel names are only at the bottom. It would be useful to have them at the top as well so I don't have to keep checking to make sure I’m on the right track.

Hey, where do you assign those quickkeys? I have an MS 5 button mouse and I'd love some of those shortcuts. How about the left and right buttons cycling through the tools?

How about colors for the different mixing tracks? Why is it that with all this computing power everything is still grey?

Hey, Mr. Mix,

I have the intellimouse explorer 3.0. On the buttons tab of the pointer software there's list with an option titled "keystroke". Select that one to program the ctrl+=.

Rabidium - by default if you click the scroll wheel it cycles through the tools!

on my mouse, i have the far left button assigned to Ctrl+[ to zoom out, the far right button set to F5 for the zoomer tool (which i keep on single click so after i use it it goes back to whatever tool i'm using) and the wheel button to Ctrl+= to toggle mix/edit windows.

with the zoom commands on the mouse, i can really fly around to make edits and fades.
