PT freezing every 5 seconds, for 2 seconds

This is weird. I use PT every day and this is totally new.

Every 5 seconds PT will freeze for 2 seconds. I mean, although it will carry on playing, the cursor line will stop flashing, and sometimes I'll get the beachball, and no buttons or anything will register or work. And if I hover in the menus, they freeze and stop working too. If I click around in those 2 seconds during the freeze, it's like it stores up each action, and does them in quick succession when it comes back.

I have changed NOTHING on my system. I've tried projects on different drives, still the same. All other software runs fine.

I do mostly editing and mixing and currently my system is completely unuseable.

Any ideas?...

I'm running PT 2019.12.0, on a MBP with High Sierra 10.13.6, 16GB RAM, 2.7ghz i7. Focusrite Clarett 8pre USB interface.

Just got this, too. Exactly as you describe. PT GUI freezes up completely every few seconds like clockwork. Very annoying.

Mac Pro 2013, 10.14.6, PT 2020.5.

I installed a Mojave security update last night. Wondering if that caused it.

This started happening to me, too. Was working last night, now... lag and stall lag and stall.
Does Pro Tools do some backdoor install? I thought it was all manual.
I installed 2020.5 a couple of days ago, but was fine until this morning. On Mojave for months.

Gonna try to roll back to 2020.3 I guess?

i've got the same problem…

i'm on Mac OS X 10.13.6 and everything was working fine yesterday… same sessions and all.

i was using PT 2019.10 and encountered these playback problems just today, so i switched to 2020.5 an hour ago, hoping it would be better, but to no avail.

i disabled auto-save, played with buffer sizes etc… no change.

I was on the phone with Avid tech support for the past couple of hours and the only workaround right now is to work offline - so no connection to the internet while in Pro Tools.

Do the same thing if you're having the same issue with PTU 2019.

I'll post any updates if they come up with a resolution outside of it just resolving on its own.

this is really strange… my PT is running smoothly again since my last post approx. 3 hours ago, everything fine… just like the problem didn't come up at all, with internet connection up.

i don't know why though… i keep my fingers crossed for you guys!

I did the opposite (2020.3 to 2020.5) and it worked. Probably just by chance.

Wow, not just me then! I assumed it was something on my system.

I too upgraded to 2020.5 yesterday, but no fix. I'll try switching off wifi until there's a permanent fix. I have a big backlog of radio and podcast stuff to make, so hopefully it's resolved soon...

Like everyone else - same issue here 2 days ago (Saturday the 30th). Don't even have to have a session open, with Pro Tools running just going through the menus in Pro Tools gives the GUI stall problem. I turned off Avid App Manager / Avid Link, and disabled sending data to Avid. Turned everything including all peripherals off, restarted and things seem to be back to normal so far - hoping this doesn't return, as working without internet is not possible here given the number of remote sessions I'm doing on a daily basis.

Would REALLY like to see some response from Avid on this - clearly something they need to address! And FWIW, 2020.3/Mojave.
