It REALLY depends on what type of band I'm working with. A lot of times it's an album that THEY want their mix to sound similar to. I respect and appreciate The Dillinger Escape Plan, but I would never listen to them on my own. I tracked mixed an album very similar to that, so I went off of that as a reference. If it was my call, I'd go off of Nirvana - Nevermind. Pretty great production quality all around.

IMHO, it's not really what music you choose. It's all about how well you know the music you are using. I use a couple songs I would never admit for fear of being mocked, then tarred and feathered!!! I just know the songs really well and playing them anywhere gives me a pretty good idea of what's going on.

  • Steely Dan - Aja
  • Steely Dan - The royal scam (for that 70s grit)
  • James Taylor - Hourglass
  • John Mayer - Continuum
  • RHCP - Blood Sugar...
These are some of my favorites. I also listen to albums from the specific genre I'm working on. That's a must for me.

I use the latest CD I bought that was recorded in a Hot Studio using Pro Tools, So right now its the New Rascall Flatts CD and Katy Perry Teenage Dream, But I remember way back when it was Madonna Like A Virgin because it was the first CD released that was DDD Recorded Digital, Mixed Digital and Released on CD, Then there were the days of gated reverb, I use Phil Collins and The Power Station CD back then, Then there was that whole British Sound thing, back then I used Duran Duran, Human League and Culture Club, oh and dont forget those Hall and Oates Big Bang Boom days, So it all depends on what going on in the Music scene and how I feel about the scene.
