Default good cheap pre(s)

I'm gonna invest some more in the front end and I need to buy either an enexpendive (under 1000) mixer with descent pre's or a few nice inexpensive pre's (under 500 each).

I know all you guys love your API's and Grace and Great Rivers and all, I love them too, but I can't afford anything near that right now. So I'm looking at something like a couple of Studio Project pre's or Joe Meeks cheap models. Or an old soundcraft or a new Mackie. I don't really like the mackies all that much, but there not bad. So how about an old funky huge 16 channel something or the other that had nice pre's like a Hill? What do you think?

Can anybody stear me in the right direction?

Pick up a used Vintech 1272 for about $750-900.

Or see what you can do on a used DA7. I saw a demo for $1500.

I just ordered two of the studio projects vtb-1 preamps after reading a lot of rave reviews... I'll let you know how it turns out. They're about $200 apiece.

I'm curious about the focusrite octapre - 8 channels of pre for under 1G.

I've never heard one - they might be a cool front end - or it may suck.

If you like check this
Spirit/Soundcraft

With 8 (very good sounding) Mic/Line inputs and 8 Outputs for under 1000$ it´s worth to mention it.
I´m very satisfied with.

Regards Wolfgang
