You could try a Repair of Windows if you have the Windows install media.
I always make an image before any install/uninstall/upgrade/update just in case something goes south. guitardom has a utility to permanently turn off Windows updates.

Thanks for all the input. I had to leave it for a few days because of Memorial weekend and family stuff. Anyway, uninstalled PT. Now going for reinstall using the Application Manager and keep getting a message that it can't install due to communications error. I'm not having any issues with my internet connections, so have no idea what that means.
If its not one thing, its something else.

And if that's not frustrating enough. After the 3rd try, I hit install on the app manager, and then after a few minutes it flashes, goes blank, and then all I see is the app manager under "Apps". I guess I'll just have to download it directly from my Avid account and do it the old fashioned way!

You have a system backup that you can use right?
 If you do, and end up using it, remember to prohibit the auto update and create a new system backup after verifying PT is working.
