Default Channelstrip ringing when notching/tight Q?

We are in a dialogue premix trying to use channelstripn just for notching. When we stop the transport or play past the end of a region, we get an audible ring out that is related to the frequencies we are notching. We can even see the ring out in the plugin's meter. It makes it onto the recorder and so makes the plugin unusable which is unfortunate as all six bands can theoretically be used for this application. Switched to EQ3 but it only has 2 tightly notchable bands.

Just wondering if anyone has noticed this.

Pro Tools 10.3.6 HDX
DSP instances of Channelstrip off mono tracks
No delay comp

Thx,
Matt

Get another EQ Plugin if you want really tight Q's. Try EQuick from DMG audio. It's really good and does not ring....... 32 bands max

Interesting.

Just attempted to recreate that here but no luck (10.3.4)
Will keep at it and see if I can hear/see the "bug".

Most EQs ring at high notch settings and band gains in the region of -40dB. I had the same experience with Waves Q10 and McDsp's Filterbank B1, to mention just a few. That is why I was using Elemental audio's (later Roger Nichols Digital) Equium, it was "ringing free". McDsp's NF575 doesn't ring, but it's not deep enough (only-18 dB band gain).
Speaking of the original question, I haven't noticed that ringing on Channel Strip. I also have to say I rarely use Q higher than 50-60.

You know I've heard the ringing too with a tight notch eq. I did not know most eq's ring at tight notches. Why is that? Anybody know the math, science behind that? Switched to eq3 ans all is good. What's the best notch eq that is dsp?

They all ring a bit. If you get Equality and then switch to the linear phase option, it rings a lot less. Oddly enough, for me the Iztope Hum remover rings a whole lot more when I select linear phase on it.
