I have been having the same problem. I've seen some threads on this but haven't found anything useful for fixing the problem.

Here is what I'm running and more detail in case anyone things it will help:

Mavericks 10.9.3
MBP 15inch (mid 2010) 2.53GHz i5 8gb RAM
003 driver 11.1.2
Running a 003 Rack
Pro tools 11.1.3

As soon as the 003 becomes the active sound playback device, a process called kernel_task rises to and stays at around 70-100% CPU and the fan on my laptop starts running very fast. Adding or removing my external firewire 800 hard drives from the chain has no effect, and I don’t have the issue when using the computer’s built in output for Pro Tools. With Pro Tools not running and just playing back audio from itunes/spotify, changing the sample rate of the 003 causes strange behavior with kernel_task cpu percentage. @96k it only uses 50-53%, @88.2k 55-60%, @48k 80-84%, and @ 44.1k 70-100%.

Has anyone on Mavericks had this problem and found a workaround/fix?

Not sure if this will help, but its worth a try. Tell the OS to NOT use the 003 as a playback device(IOW, only Pro Tools will playback thru the 003). If that helps, there are plenty of solutions to hearing all non-PT audio

I am having exactly the same problem. Here's my setup . .

Mavericks 10.9.4
MBP 15-inch (Late 2011), 2.4.GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM
003 driver 11.1.2
003 console
Protools 11.1.3

Went ahead and tried this, but it didn't change anything for the better. kernel_task cpu % jumps up as soon as the 003 is connected even if its not the playback device.

Is anyone using Pro Tools 11, 003 rack, Mavericks on Macbook Pro and not getting this problem?

I've also noted that the fan speed increases to around 6200 RPM and the temp rises to roughly 165+ degrees F. As soon as I quit PT11, the MBP fans slow down and the temps come down quickly to 100 degrees F.

This is with no session loaded, PT just idling! It worsens when a session is loaded and audio playback begins.

My Setup:

Mavericks 10.9.4
MBP 15-inch (Late 2011), 2.4.GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM
003 driver 11.1.2
Protools 11.1.3

Same situation here I think. Can just be on desktop with no programs open, a few seconds after turning 003 on I get the kernel_task jump (usually about 80%). When I open Pro Tools, kernel_task is still at about 80% and PT itself about 180% making it pretty much impossible to do anything.

Tried different cables, a firewire express card (which meant a regular 400 to 400 FW cable instead of 800 to 400), a clean install of mavericks with only Pro Tools installed, different versions of 11, different 003 drivers. Nothing has helped.

Been trying to solve this for months and never seen Avid make a comment on it or reply to anyone so not too hopeful that it'll be addressed in a driver update.

Macbook Pro 17", 16GB Ram, 500GB SSD/ 750GB HD (late 2011)
003 Rack (driver 11.1.2)
Pro Tools 11.2.1

I'm having the same problem on Mountain Lion.

PT 11.2
MacPro5,1 (12 core, 64 GB RAM)
OS 10.8.5
003 Rack

I also have an Eleven Rack, if that raises any flags.

Just having the 003 Rack driver engaged (that is, Pro Tools open but no session open) sends the kernel_task flying.

I rolled back to the 10.3.3 driver and selected it in Pro Tools 10. ("003" instead of "Avid 003 Rack") No kernal_task problem, but also no Pro Tools 11.

Is anyone running Pro Tools 11 with an 003 without this issue?

Obviously this has been going on for some time with both the 002 and 003 family and mBox since 2013.

It doesn't appear that Avid has acknowledged that there is a driver problem and, I suspect since the 002 and 003 are legacy hardware, that there may not be a fix in the works. I hope I'm wrong but my gut tells me we may be on our own.

Avid? Would love for you to at least acknowledge that you're aware of this issue and give us some idea if there is a plan to fix this.

And, if not, at least let us be aware that we're going to have to replace our 002 and 003 hardware. Leaving us hanging is not good business.

Mavericks 10.9.4
MBP 15-inch (Late 2011), 2.4.GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM
003 driver 11.1.2
Protools 11.1.3

I am running 2 focusrite 428s lite pipe to digi 003 rack, firewire to mac pro 5,1, the only trouble I have had where cables, both l/pipe and firewire, and I admit I did hot swap firewire cable and blow the digi firewire chip (bad bad) other then that all works great on maverick and 11.1.2, re the firewire cable 400 to 80 (apple cable) it worked perfectly on a imac so thought it would be ok but would not work on the system above really wield, so replaced it with another good quality cable and everything hunky dorie.
Cheers
Mazzie
