Intel PCIe/NVMe drive technology moving down from the enterprise/server market...

SATA is dead (Well... he will be soon-- he's very ill...  ) and the future is M.2 PCIe SSD drives in laptops and desktops and NVMe PCIe drives in the highest-end desktops and servers. You will be seeing many more motherboards that provide M.2 SSD connection and high end Workstation motherboards with SFF-8639 PCIe connectors for SSD disk. (which is why the Mac Pro trashcan is such a disappointment, a little SFF-8639 connection has around one and a half times the bandwidth of a Thunderbolt 2 connection).
