Default Windows 8.1 Crashing

Ok so I updated to 11.1
I love it! My long midi waits on startup are over!

And coupled with Win 8, it seems to be incredibly smooth.

However, there is a problem with crashing.

Every so often-well actually quite often, it crashes for no apparent reason.
This seems especially true when loading a large VI.

My plugs are all updated (Ni/Play/etc.)

*Update: I just realized that Play had cpu overload protection enabled. I will disable it and see if that fixes the crashing.

**Update Pt. 2: The Issue has not been resolved. I'm petty sure it crashed when saving auto backups as the backup file is 1 Kilobyte and says "error: end of stream."

Default Re: Windows 8.1 Crashing

This is definitely a problem with saving backup files while loading plugins.

PT crashes and any attempts to open the file reads this error:

"Could not complete the Open Session... command because end of stream encountered "

FYI I had the same problem with windows 7.

It seems to be an incompatibility with PLAY and Autosave features of PT.

Oddly enough I didn't notice this issue as much with PT 8.1 Preview- but it is quite common in 8.1 Pro Release.

From this web page (
http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/e...ements&x=0&y=0 ) regarding 11 compatibility:

Note: Window 8.1 is not supported at this time. Avid will announce official support here when testing is completed.

Thanks.

I had this same problem with windows 7 though, so I hope it is looked into in full.
I can successfully duplicate the error.

Also, compatibility mode in 8.1 (windows 7 mode) crashes PT.

Here is how to duplicate the error:
Open PT
Load one instrument instance of PLAY.
Open play and select a large patch.
While the loading bar is in progress: save session = pro tools will crash.

I would also like to point out that simply opening a session and leaving it for an extended period of time will crash PT.

I opened a working session (after everything loaded) and left it idle for a bit (~ 30mins), and when I came back, PT had crashed. I still suspect Auto save not being compatible with plugins.

And yes I tried this on 11.1.1 as well- it is overall more stable but still volatile.

11.1 works fine for me on Windows 8.1 Pro. Have you done ALL of the optimizations?

Cheers,

The Read Me for 11.1.1 says that it supports 8.1!

And not that this helps directly, but compatibility mode is quite different than real Windows 7 running on a real physical PC, its using a hypervisor/vitualization technology, and many physical devices are not directly accessible etc... all the last thing you want to run a DAW in. Just not worth worrying about.

---

So but the main question with Pro Tool crashing would be.. what exact crash report do you get (past detail here from the Windows Error report message) and what happens if you remove *all* third party plugins from Pro Tools? (physically move the file out of the AAX folder and restart)... this should be one of the first tests you do with any Pro Tools crashing or other instability/memory leak/CPU burn problems. Folks are reporting simmialr problems to what you are seeing and, many times it does appear to be plugin related. if removing all the plugins fixes the problem, then put them back in batches until you can find the offending plugin.

---

BTW the WD20EARS-00MVWB0 drive you have is a WDC Caviar Green drive, these are just toxic for Pro Tools audio file use. You just have "Archives" on it so hopefully you are not using for an actual audio/session drive.
