How can this still be happening? People rely on this software for their income. Given the amount of time, I would think there is some type of memory trap or system performance utility the software companies use to isolate this issue. I don't trust the 9173 error either. It reminds me of blaming an innocent family dog for the smell in the room.

Most likely. I usually have no CPU troubles with my late2013 rMBP, but if I forget to leave Mail and Messages open and someone sends me a huge file, PT won't like it when OSX starts downloading. So, it might be good to check whether PT is the only open application or not (or turn off the wifi altogether).

I've had moderate stability by manually purging unused memory using Cocktail.
However it's manual and I get caught up in the music and wham....

My opinion is it's related to memory/time as after 9173's the backup-session intervals are greater than my settings.

10.8x to 10.9x to 10.10x chasing the resolve of this issue.

Hats off to Zion (Not having these errors)

Mixing RAM type/speed/size only reduces the performance of the computer.

Now, I doubt this caused your issue, since I faced the same problem on my MBPRetina recording @ 44.1, 512 and only 8 tracks....
Thanks Felipe. In each lane I have sticks of 2, 4, 2, 2. All 1333 MHz. I thought that was adequate. Will check configuration requirements for sure. Thanks again.

I got this error with only one instance of PLAY active... HWS with three mics.
Sorry but something is totally BROKE.

I guess I'll have to try boot camp... and if that still doesn't work I will consider selling my HD OMNI and switch DAWs because I've had this problem for years now.

Memory purge doesn't seem to do much...

The last time I called avid we went through a million hoops to no avail, I got tried of it and upgraded my computer to a new system entirely, but then my ASC ran out before we could resolve the issue. I'm not too happy about having to pay more money since my last ticket did nothing to solve the problem.

I have unused ASC but they expired and refused to renew.

As best as I can tell Kontakt and Play are broken and not compatible with PT CPU engine. And The EWQL/Kontakt people simply blame PT and PT simply blames the plug so it's getting nowhere.
The worst part is that it claims to be "compatible" (it's on the list).

It's very sad but I have to use these plugins so I may abandon Pro Tools if I can't get a solution in the next month or so.

I'm sad that I went to all of this time and money to upgrade to the near highest-end mac, get avid official gear, and the works to no avail.

I don't use mail and disabling Wifi doesn't do much of anything.
Regardless, it strikes as very odd that simply using Chrome or something in the bg would crash PT- when no apps have the problem (i.e. adobe) and considering I have 24 threads...

Based on what I have seen/experienced:
1. This is not specific to a certain DAW
2. This is not specific to a certain model of Mac (Though it seems like the vast majority of people experiencing this problem have macs made in the last 2 years, especially "thin" imacs).
3. This is not specific to a certain version of Mac OS (Anything 10.8 or higher can be affected)
4. Not all CPU meters on the computer display the spike. (Example: PT CPU meter will not show any excessive usage, while Kontakt and/or Activity monitor get pegged to the max).
5. This problem is completely random and has nothing to do with what you as a user are doing with the computer.
6. People who have tried switching RAM (even back to apple OEM RAM) have not gotten rid of the problem.
7. People using a 3rd party interface or people using HD Native hardware have experienced the problem

There are simply too many variables here to put the blame on a single piece of software or hardware. The only thing that seems to be a constant is the OS is always 10.8 or greater. So what's different about these newer OS's?
1. Airplay (Can not be disabled AFAIK)
2. App Store is the only way to get updates
3. Gatecreeper
4. All 3 OS's are still getting security updates
5. All 3 OS's have much tighter integration/sync with iphones/ipads than previous versions.
