Default Routing Guitar Signal In/Out from MBOX

Hi,

I was wondering if it would be possible to use the AVID MBOX to
wire in a guitar signal, process it via software on my laptop, then
send it back out through the MBOX into a guitar amp.

If this is possible, how could it be done? Would I need any specific
gain staging or special cables?

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you!

Routing is easy, but I'm not sure how good it will sound, due to impedance/gain issues. Plug the guitar into the Mbox and feed a mono AUX track. Insert the amp sim plugin of choice. Feed one output(or both for stereo) to your amp. The problems: set your buffer in PT as low as you can for the least latency. Start with the output(use a MASTER track to control the output) turned way down, and then bring it up slowly until the amp sounds similar in volume to having the guitar plugged into the amp. The different level and impedance of the Mbox output may cause the final sound to be "different" from the guitar plugged straight to the amp, but that difference may be acceptable(or it may be great), you won't know till you try it.

Other options; use a re-amp box that converts the line output(or the Mbox) to a more "guitar-like" signal. Feed direct boxes and send the signal out(bypass the amp altogether). Skip the whole thing and buy a Line 6 PODHD.....

Hey there,

Thanks for the reply.

So, I'm trying to figure out how to route the signal,
but unfortunately, I'm not the most proficient with
interfaces... so, I plug in my guitar into either of the two
front or back input sources, and it successfully sends
signal to my software, but this is where I'm having trouble.
I can't seem to get any audio from the monitor outs on the
MBOX to my amp. Instead, I get a consistent amount of
noise from my amp, no matter how I set the volume from
my software master outs. Do I have to set anything
differently in the MBOX application or do I just go straight
from my software?

By the way, I have pro tools, but I usually
use Ableton. Would this make a difference?

Thanks again for your reply.

Have you opened the Mbox program and checked the signal paths on the virtual mixer yet?

Yes, I seem to get the signal coming in, but I'm not sure
what parameters should be set to what in order to get audio
out of my monitor outs.

Which of the following determines monitor out volume level?

"Software Returns" or "Software Return FX Sends"?

I have not changed any of the original settings in the MBOX application.

Thanks again, guys.
