Default PT 11.3.1 Freezes when Consolidating clip

Hello everyone, Recently ive been having problems with my pro tools. Im running sessions off an external hard drive (WD my passport Ultra 2TB) Ive been using it for a while now and recently i cant render tracks! I had a problem the other day when trying to export tracks as stems and now i cant Consolidate a clip (Shift+Option+3) It just stays on rendering clip with the spinning rainbow. I also had an AAE 35 error when i tried using a track from a thumb drive into a session that was running off the HD. I had to import it into the drive. I have a feeling it might be the drive but its fairly new maybe a few moths old. Its formatted (FAT32) Because im constantly passing files between mac and PC. I am pretty well experienced with pro tools but i cant wrap my head around this. Please help me i need to finish a session

My computer is a 15" MBP 8GB Ram, i7 2.4GHz, PT 11.3.1 Mac OSX 10.9.5

Your Passport Ultra at 5400rpm is too slow for PT, this is why you are having problems. Spinner disc drives need to be 7500 rpm to be able to read and write the data fast enough. The thumb drive is even slower.

It was working fine and everything would work fine until recently. If is too slow wouldnt it have done that from the beginning?

Not much of a Mac guy but maybe not all USB ports on your laptop are USB3.0?

Could check the disk for bad sectors and defragment it.

Wouldn't explain the thumb-drive issue though. Does it have the same name as another connected drive?
