Should I record everything clean?
Is it wrong to record audio with outboard effects such as a channel strip? Or should I record clean and add compression eq and so on later in my DAW?

A lot of guys are still recording through their analog recording consoles to get the sound of the analog systems. Other prefer to record everything completely clean and then add whatever analog saturation in post. Adding EQ and compression is sort of a this or that equation. If you EQ the recording on the way in, then you can't undo it. Likewise with compression. It just depends on what you are going after and how much flexibility you want.

I usually do, but agree with the previous post on what you are doing. You can always experiment prior, which sometimes just test it out with a mock session or something if you are not experienced with this type of thing. G

Re: Should I record everything clean?
If you know what you are doing/want you can record through whatever you want, just make sure you don't change your mind after. I personally tend more and more towards getting the song right on the recording even if that means tracking through hardware effects I won't be able to bypass later. Before, I used to craft/plan my mixes after the songs were recorded, it never really worked.

I would just never go overboard with any outboard. Kiss that threshold go easy with the GR. Don’t cut too much with EQ...just be easy with it. So when you get to PT there is still some wiggle room. All major drum process for me are done in PT. All parallel processing’s well. But everything else is open season.

Re: Should I record everything clean?
There are a few things I would use compression on on the way in: piano, singers (unless they have really excellent self level control), and drums. All with a low ratio like 1.5 to 1 and just enough threshold to get a dB or two gain reduction. If I ever have to track a metal drummer who hits like Thor's hammer then a limiter would be in the chain.
And this brings up an interesting point at least for me: self level control by the person in front of the mic whether it be singer, guitarist, whatever. A good one will never need much compression if at all; witness Frank Sinatra. Legend is the engineers on his session never used compression on the way to tape because he had such good level control. Another reason for not compressing heavily on the way in is the mic will pick up everything going on and make it heard all the more easily making it more difficult to fix after it goes to 'tape'. Chair squeaks, jewelry tinkling, breath noises, etc. EQ on the way in? Never. I'll change mics and/or mic patterns before doing that. |
