Re: Should I record everything clean?
Things to consider:
#1-tracking with plugins doesn't "print" the plugins(the plugins are processing the audio AFTER its recorded) #2-you CAN bus your tweaked audio to another track and record it WITH the processing(but as said, be sure you like what you hear) #3-I use hardware compression while recording, but I keep it very gentle. #4-there is no RULE on this stuff, only suggestions Back to #1 for a moment, when I track bands, I have lots of plugins going, and most(if not all) will still be in place when I go to mix. They will probably get some tweaks(especially EQ's) and several more plugins will be enabled(I don't track thru some plugins due to the amount of latency, but I love them in a mix. Example: Waves JJP signature or iZotope RX for de-buzzing noisy guitar tracks)

Re: Should I record everything clean?
Great advice from all above !!!
Personally, I record with no processing. I do monitor with plugs from the get-go, and tweak plug settings as needed during tracking/mixing. I have templates of plug chains that work for me, so I can get good sounds quickly. If I need to punch-in at a later date, I only need to match mic, pre, and placement. My 2 cents !!!

That "2 cents worth" is worth $1K, all day long

Re: Should I record everything clean?
When a singer wants compression, I split the mike and record both with and without. While there is a lot to be said for committing, the most convincing settings often depend on everything being in place.
