How do you think Led Zeppelin recorded drums?
I was listening to "Rock and Roll" from LZ 4 and my very amateur guess is that they miced the kick, the snare and had two overheads.
Great sound. I tend to lean towards the "less is more" side of things, but I've never miced a drum kit before. What do you think? jason |

although the toms seem to be placed separately throughout the stereo image, so they must have had mics also. I couldn't tell about the hat.

Re: How do you think Led Zeppelin recorded drums?
I saw an article about the place they recorded and where they recorded the drums in a hall where fleetwood mack recorded in some manor I think it was a few months back. Anyway Jimmy Page was in the picture and being interviewed it was interesting and enlightning.

Re: How do you think Led Zeppelin recorded drums?
4-5 Tracks should be more than enough to record a drum kit. Bass Drum, Snare, 2 Overheads, maybe 1 spot Hi-hat mic etc. A lot of classic recordings were made with less than this.
I can't believe these drummers who want 12 mics on their kit. The worst drum recordings were made in the 1980's when on some recordings all you could hear was the drums esspecially the snare! Steve Lillywhite take note! You'll usually find that drummers ability closely corresponds with the size of their kit, the bigger the kit the worse the drummer! My favorite drummers(hey I'm only a guitar player what do I know!) Reni Stone Roses, Kenney Jones Small Faces, Mitch Mitchell Jimi Hendrix, Pete De Fretias Echo & the Bunnymen(RIP) Steve White Paul Weller. John Kiernan London N19 |

Re: How do you think Led Zeppelin recorded drums?
Standard kit with two toms and one floor: 8 mics... That's a minimum for me. I agree that less is more, but recording extra's like the bottom of a snaredrum or a mic on the hihat or ride can make you final mix sound soooooooooooo much better. Never used room mics though, don't think they're necessary.

There is a lot of information out there on this subject. (And basically electrobank and S-D-A are on the right track...) Badooker - you're such a kidder! |
