Default Yamaha 6416 2x burn no go???

I,ve just downloaded MLCD 2.2 ant tried it with a new Yamaha 6416. Burn at 6x speed is very good, but I cannot activate 2x button - it's greyed out. I've alwayd done master CD for press at 2x speed - does something changed lately? And - does Plextor 8220 support 2x burn?
Thanks,
Przemek.

Hi Przemek,

That's the correct behavior. The 6416 does NOT support 2X burns. The Plextor 8220 DOES support 2X burns but I would recommend using the 8X speed rather than 2X. This is contrary to traditional wisdom that Digi has recommended in the past, but we've changed our recommendation based on the reason below...

With the new 6X and 8X drives that are coming out, it appears that many of the CD-R manufacturers are concentrating their efforts on optimizing for those faster speeds and neglecting the slower speeds somewhat. With the newer drives, we are seeing higher quality discs (i.e.: less block errors and E32's as measured by a CD analyzer) when using the faster speeds of the drive. Therefore, we now recommend using the fastest speed that your drive supports. This is mentioned in the MLCD 2.2 README in the section named "Disc Write Speed Observations".

I'm glad that 6X burns are working well for you! We found the 6X discs on the 6416 to be of suitable quality for professional duplication. The same is true of the Plextor drives at 8X if you decide to go that route.

Cheers,

-- Marc

That's the kind of answer I like!
Thank you ... and I'll rather buy Plextor. The speed, you know
Thanks,
Przemek.
