Default MLCD at 4x

Even though I've purchased the newly supported Yamaha CD-RW 4416 4x4x16. Is it still recommended to burn audio CDs at 2x only rather than 4x?

Hi Dan,

According to our disc quality tests, the CRW4416S burns discs at 4X that are well within spec and are good candidates for professional duplication.

I wouldn't knock it down to 2X unless you have a problem with 4X, like buffer underruns, and even then I'd call customer support and try to determine the cause.

I hope you enjoy your new drive!

The general concensus is that 2X yields fewer errors than 4X or even 1X. In addition to speed, matching the right blank media with your burner is a very important.

However, your new burner may be more forgiving in some areas. I don't know if your unit has been tested by Glenn Meadows
but he has done extensive testing of media and burners. The info is available at:

FYI, I usually burn client refs at 4X and replication masters at 2X on my Yamaha 400 with Mitsui gold media. No problems so far!

I also have a Yamaha CDR400t and I'm using MITSUI CD's to burn at 4x speed. I never had problems. Check also if you have firmware revision "q" for your CDR400t (latest one).

Ciao,

Dirk

Just a small note for those who just bought or are considering some of the newer, faster (i.e.: 6X, 8X drives)...

With some of those drives, that tried and true wisdom about 2X being the best speed is not always true.

We've found that on some drives, they write better quality discs at 6X or 8X than at 2X. Some of them seem to write discs with E32 errors at 2X, which means those discs would be rejected for professional duplication.

I recently mastered a project at Mastermix in Nashville. We all selected in a blind comparison the 8x burns over a 2x. Both burns were made from the same burner, same playlist, minutes after each other. Only a change in burn speed was applied.

3 seperate people, 4 out of 4 times, including Ken Love...go figure!
