Default AC3 optical --> S3

would anyone have an idea of what would be the best way to get an optical AC3 playback stream from a computer into an S3 console? I guess I am looking for an external box that can decode AC3 in realtime to 5.1 on either separate AES/EBU or high quality XLR analog audio. Has to be bullet-proof highest quality.

Right now we have an RME sound card with Windows WDM driver doing the decoding to 5.1 (left, right, center, lfe, sLeft, sRight) to analog but it is not reliable enough, probably due to WDM. So instead I'd like to take the onboard optical signal (AC3) and have it decoded by a stand-alone box to a format the S3 system will accept.

thanks for any suggestions, Marten
