Default 002 Rack- hardware not found error

I've got a 002 rack that's on the fritz. I've never had a problem with it until now. I'm running PT8 on a 2.66 Intel iMac 10.5.8. Everything is connected properly but the 002 rack won't show up on the firewire bus. I've tried different cables etc. When I first plug it in and boot everything up the green lights turns on but then immediately turns off. If I let it sit a while I can hear it occasionally clicking and sounding like it's starting up, the lights will come on and then turn off again. I'm guessing something's up with the FW port on the 002. Anyone have similar issues or have any ideas?

Do a search on the infamous "Power Harness" issue. It is a well known problem that affects many 002/002R interfaces. There is a short term solution where you open the unit up and reseat all the connectors. This worked for me for 6-12 months. The long term solution is to contact Digidesign's Technical support and walk through the diagnostic process and if they confirm that the power harness is the issue, they will send you a replacement power harness with better connectors. The issue really is caused by oxidation on the metal contacts. That is why reseating the connectors will scrape off some of the oxidation and make better electrcal contact.

So I did go ahead and open it up and reseat the connectors and that seems to have done it... for now...:)

What I do is wiggle and reseat the connectors several times to scrape off as much of the oxidation as I can. Someone suggested using "deoxit", a contact cleaner to clean off oxidation and also to inhibit the formation of new oxidation. That sounds good in theory. While I had my unit open it is a good time to blow out any dust bunnys. Wasn't it interesting how may little screws were needed to keep the unit together? Time to get a powered screwdriver.

Some folks put 4 screws back in and bag the rest. If it sits in rack that never travels, 4 is plenty.
