i couldn't recommend a combination of mics that comes in under several grand that i like to use on drums but i have to say the only new "drum" microphone i like is the Sennheiser E904. sounds cool on toms. it's no 421 or 414EB, that's for sure, but beats the hell outta any other new thing i've heard. it's actuall got some mid-range in it!

obviously everyone has their favorites. So here are mine.
I've recorded my fair share of punk and metal, and these are the mics that work for me in these genres:
kick: sennheiser e 602= $180
snare: shure sm57= $90
(for heavy music I don't mic the hi-hat but maybe a shure sm-81)
Toms: sennheisr MD421's= $350 a piece
Overheads: The two nicest condensor's you can afford. I like the AKG 414's but they run about $900 a pair.

Also, use a really nice condensor for a room mic and blend to taste.

I'd say a grand would be about the least you could spend to get some decent mics. Or you could spend all your money on really good overhead mics and not mic the snare or the toms. So many directions you could go.

I do mostly metal/hardcore bands and have had good luck with the following:

Kick: AT2500 (condensor and dynamic combined/very versitile)
Snare: good 'ol sm57 on top and bottom
Toms: latly been using e602's (sometimes e609's)and a D112 for the floor tom.
Overheads, hats and ride: Believe it or not the Studio Projects B1's or C4's. Inexpensive and sound pretty good! (i'll catch some crap about them here im sure

kick beta52, good instant kick drum sound, so easy to get a great clickly metal sound
snare sm57, when you on a budget you dont need a botom snare mic
toms beta 56/57
O/H any of a million condensers small or large. MK-012, NT5, SM81, CAD M series LDC, Rode NTK, what ever you can afford

I think there may be more people that use them that wont admit to it
Quite a hidden treasure if you ask me. For the money and the sound quality they are a best bet for sure.

Anyone have any clips of the studio project mics in action for overheads? This post sparked my curiosity because I have 2 Shure PG81's and they tend to sound a little 'closed in' and thin, not really giving the full spectrum of sounds from the cymbals. thanksssss.

The easy and good route:
Audix DP5 kit with your favorite set of overheads (i prefer royer ribbons or a pair of oktava 012's)

An even cheaper build-a-package route that'll give you very clean results:
D6 kick (or your preferred kick mic)
D1 or 57 snare
MXL 990's for toms (basically a side adress 603)
Pick your overheads...some people like 603's or 991's, too bright for my taste on OH.
