Default Mic Cable Length . . .

Quick Question . . .
I want to wire a vocal booth outside of my home studio and was just wandering if there was a limit to the length of the mic cable between the mic and the preamp at which the sound quality starts to decrease? How about plugging male to female of two cables to increase the overall length? Will that mess up sound quality? I have a TLM103 so I dont want to screw this up.
Thanks,
JE

p.s. did anyone else see Steve Tyler make an ass out of himself at the Indianapolis 500?

With a low impedance microphone and a good quality cable, the book says you should be able to go two or three hundred feet without trouble.

BUT...

I wouldn't do it that way. Vocal recording is critical, and the TLM-103 is a good microphone, but don't make it work any harder than you have to. The best way to ensure quality with your setup is to put the mike preamp in the vocal booth. Use a short piece of the BEST CABLE YOU HAVE between the mike and preamp; six to ten feet if you can get away with it, but no more than 20 ft. Then take the +4 line ouput of the preamp and let the preamp drive that long cable at line level, go straight into your recorder, and you should be fine. Again, as long as you are using a good quality cable, don't worry about plugging several cables together to get that far. It will work.

Best of luck,

SC
