Default Would this computer work?

I need to replace my HP Workstation and was wondering if this computer (mostly motherboard and case) would work for HD1 with a PCIe card:

I may possibly expand to HD2 later but nothing has been decided yet.

Tanks a lot for your help

GD

The big issue as you know is fitting the really long PT cards in the computer. To me it looks like they would fit if you were to use this computer. Looking at the pictures of the mb, you might have an issue expanding to HD2. The pcie slots need to be right next to each other.

The video card is huge. I've always read here to use smaller video cards. I'm not sure of all of the theory behind that reasoning, something about the system using more ram with large ram video cards. I'm currently using a 256mb ATI video card (dual dvi).

Also, I haven't used Seagate drives for sessions/OS, only back-up drives. The concensus here among builders is to stick with the WD Black 32mb cache drives.

Just looking though, it looks like this would probably work with an HD1 rig.

I love the ATI cards but none the HD1 computers Digi reccomends comes with them.
They're all NVidea. At least the HP Workstations (Z800).
I was also trying to stay away from the HP prices.
With these guys I can put together a very nice and powerful system for about 2k.
The Digi recomended HP Workstations like the Z800 line is not that powerful.
I know they can be expanded but for the price one is not getting a very powerful computer.
I also like my computers to have quiet fans.
This is the only reason I started looking.

Thanks

I understand, the supported systems are either too expensive or underpowered!!!

I built a Intel i7 computer for our HD2 rig recently with parts from new egg. If you'd like I can email you the parts list for comparison. You can contact me away from the forums at DanaSampson [at] ThirdEyeStudios.org

If you could please just tell me what case and motherboard you used that should be enough info to get me started.

Thanks for your help, I greatly appreciate it.

IKONIK Ra X10 Smooth IC-R1CBN Black Computer Case

SUPERMICRO MBD-X8SAX-O ATX Server Motherboard

Intel Core i7-920 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor

ATI FirePro V3700 100-505551 Workstation Video Card

This motherboard has been working great with our Windows 7 64bit HD2 rig. Unfortunately, another user tried a HD3, and was not able to get it going smoothly.

The Ikonik case is huge, but I love it!! Best case I've ever used (i haven't used a ton though).

Over the last few days I've gone back and forth on building a computer vs getting another HP Workstation.

Digi recommends an HP Z800 Workstation, among others, for HD1.
http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?...rticles&eid=87

For some reason they don't have that same Z800 on their HD2 list at all.
http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?...ticles&eid=849

Does that mean the Z800 is ONLY compatible with HD1 and I will not be able to later expand to HD2 on this same computer?

Please tell me, I'll make the purchase within the next few weeks.
Just need to finish a couple of projects before I make my move.
I have HD1 PCIe and would possibly like to upgrade to HD2 at some point later this year but I don't want to have to buy another computer then too.

Thanks a lot for your help

The HP Z800 Workstation is officially qualified with Pro Tools HD 8.0 and higher software and the following Pro Tools|HD systems:
  • Pro Tools|HD Accel PCIe (PCI Express) Systems:
    • HD1, HD2, HD3, and HD4 Accel PCIe systems supported, all cards installed internally on the Z800
    • HD Accel Core and up to 6 Accel PCIe cards, all cards installed in the Digidesign EB7 PCIe-to-PCIe Expansion Chassis
  • Pro Tools|HD PCI Systems:
    • Pro Tools|HD and Pro Tools|HD Accel PCI systems are not supported for internal installation on the Z800
    • HD Core and up to 5 HD PCI cards, all cards installed in the Magma PE6R4 Expansion Chassis
  • Pro Tools|HD cards cannot be installed in both the host computer and an expansion chassis. All HD cards must be in only one hardware host system or the other.
  • See Expansion Chassis Options below for links to additional requirements with chassis
  • Please Note: The HP Z800 has not been tested with Pro Tools HD 7.4 or earlier
I copy/pasted this from the HP z800 page. It's not on the HD2 page, but it says it will work with HD2 here.
