Default How Big a Learning Curve on Digi003 (002) Hardware Interface

I have a Digi001 and it has served me well. I am going to upgrade and probably exchange my way up to an 003 system. I think I could immediately start using the 003 rack without too much time spent figuring out the differences. But I am thinking it sure would be nice to have a hardware interface to mix without instead of the old mouse.

I am burned out on learning curves for technology though. How long did take those of you using an 002 or 003 with the hardware mix interface to feel comfortable using it?

Thanks,
bilco

I have the DIGI 002. The DIG 003 is much the same.
Have only had it a week or so and it is an absolutely breeze. Most of the functions are duplicating common menus or commands on the software. I think you would find it very intuitive and worthwhile.
Good luck!

Hi there, i have an 002R and i have had it for 2 months, im currently looking for a control surface and too be honest think i've made an error in judgement. HUI's for Pro Tools are real expensive if you want total integration and so is the cost of going to an 002. I'm starting to wish i had gone for the M-Audio Project Mix i/o. It's way way cheaper then the 002, has 8 mic pre's as opposed to the 002/003's 4 mic pres and a pretty impressive control surface. Ok, so you have to buy M-Powered Pro Tools but over here in the UK it's still a massive saving of a round 450GBP after you'v combined the two .

Cheers

PS: Think i'm gonna have to settle for a Behringer BCF2000, not a patch on a project mix setup.

I know exactly how you feel... wanting to by a new computer but the 001 PCI card is not compatible with the new PCI buses... Hoping that Digidesign would release a new coreaudio driver with 001 support.

Yup, I was also in the same situation and decided to go with an 002R. On the same I called to upgrade, They release the 003. Now I'm an owner of an 003R.. I have not done any major work yet but, so far it is working fine. There is really not that much of a learning curb. you will be up and runing almost instanly. I do find that the headphone's signals are a little bit weaker than the 001 but I can live with that.

I started with a Mbox and wasn't happy, I bought a 002 and I am happy, If you want a Interface/control surface then a 002 or 003 would be a good starting point. I

f HD might someday be on the horizon I beleive you could go with a Command 8 and a rack interface and reuse the Control 8 with HD.

If you think you would like a 002 or 003 chances are you will, I think they are fairly intuitive (and most of the buttons have labels anyway)

If you've been happy weith a 001 a 002 or 003 will probably make you day

There are definate advantages to the 003 or 003r/controller set-ups. I'll start by saying I love my 002. Once you've used a controller to mix you'll wonder how you used just a mouse and keyboard for so long. But the one thing I didn't think about before getting the 002 is the clutter that can be caused by having to plug everything into the "controller" (which is mostly hidden with the desk I'm using). Where a rack and controller are potentially more tidy you have to get to the back of the rack to change anything. Also a could be made more easily portable, just leave the controller at home, and rack all your pres, fx, whatever with the 003r. Anyways not really any help just some food for thought.

I had not even thought of the M Pro Tools route. That M-Audio Project Mix I/O is a nice looking interface if the 8 preamps are of reasonaable quality.

I already have an RNP and a Behringer ADA8000, so the 4 preamps in the Digi003 combined with what I have should be enough. Plus, if I upgrade to PT 7.X, I really want the software that comes bundled with the Factory option, Melodyne, etc.

Thanks for the suggestion though. I may think about getting the M-Audio Project Mix, M Pro Tools and Melodyne plugin.

I have made up my mind I want a hardware mix interface of some kind. I am tired of mousing it.

Hey, the basic melodyne which is very basic and doesn't pitch correct like you probably want it to is in the ignition pack. You can pick these up on ebay for $50 so i wouldn't let it affect your decision.

Cheers

Also you might want to check, i think the project mix has hardware monitoring as opposed to the 002/003 which are only software monitoring. Coming from an Mbox i find it extremely irritating that i have to have an aux or rec enabled track to get throughput in to Pro Tools. I think Project mix i/0 is a Firewire 18/14 with the touch surface built in.

Cheers
