Default Anyone Try this? Hack to get 9.0 to boot on new DP G4s - Digi 002

Im probably going to get a Digi 002. I Have a new DP 1.25 G4, and it doesn't boot 9. But Ive heard the following hack may work. Im curious if anyone has tried it before I personally go through the hassle:

Install OS 9 onto a firewire drive from any OS 9 bootable machine (like a friends machine.) Then, partition your internal HD, and format one partitiion as "MAC OS standard." Then, simply drop and drag OS 9 from the firewire drive, to the partition, and thats it! IIve heard this works, but seems too simple.

Anyone try this?

Basically, I was talking to a salesman at a Sam Ash store, who told me he had the EXACT same problem as me. HE had a DP, and wanted to get OS9 on there. HE told me it worked for him.

HE said the issue is that there is data burned into the computer's ROM that tells it NOT to install any OS 9 boot info. But by installing the data on a hardrive from a 9 bootable machine, and then dragging it onto your partition, supposedly it will then recognize OS 9 as being "bootable"

I heard it works 100%, but I want other people's opinions before I run out and get a firewire drive...and a friend...jk

in the disk utility program there is an option to install os9 disk drivers when partitioning a hard drive. couldn't you just get another hard drive, hook it up (either external or internal), partition it with that option selected and then install os9 on it???

Sorry, but I tried this (as well as everything else I could think of) with my new dual 1.25 G4, and nothing worked. The problem isn't that the new G4 won't install OS9 boot info, the problem is that it simply refuses to accept OS9 as a valid operating system at all--I have a FireWire drive with partitions containing OS9 installations that work with other Macs, and my new G4 simply will not boot to them, even if there are no OSX systems available. Trying to boot from an OS9 CD doesn't work, either.

Apple offers OS9 bootable machines with the new processors. Why not just buy one of those.

Unfortunately there is no work around for this. I spoke with apple and they confirmed that all the new macs have this "feature" right on the motherboard/ROM. all new macs will only boot into OS X. for the most part OS 9 is history. Of course we still have classic mode, but that doesn't help all of us PT 5 users. The only thing you can do is buy an "older" mac that will still boot. I unfortunately had to settle for a 15" Tbook. I wanted the 17" but I had no choice.
For obvious reasons mac is putting their efforts and R&D into OS X. so either go up to PT 6 on a new machine, or find an "old" machine that will still boot OS 9.

Because:

1) The "old" new machines that boot OS9 are LOUD, even with the $20 power supply upgrade.

2) Some of these machines have problems with the 001, although Apple supposedly exchanges those logic boards.

3) These machines are $500 more expensive.

4) Some of these machines were reported to have interference leaking into the audio circuitry.

5) See number 1, that's the only reason I needed!
