Default Install PT 12 & PT HD9 on same drive?

Howdy,

I'm PT HD9, I want to try 12 vanilla as they say...can I install PT 12 on the same drive that already has PT HD9 on it - without screwing up my world too bad? There's other drives on the Mac so I could put it another drive if I had too but it's an SSD and I'd like to do it. It'll be two separate licenses, I don't have to surrender HD9, I'm just additionally buying PT12? I suppose I could always reinstall HD if something gets corrupted.

Can I do it?

Thanks!

you could try renaming PTHD9 .. to pro tools HD9.xxx using the full name of the version and see what happens .. i do it with PT10,11,12 but not exactly sure if ti will work with PT9 ..

I wouldn't and here's why; 9(and everything from 10, back) use RTAS and 11/12 use AAX 64 plugin formats, having tons of extra folders for all the versions of every plugin is just not efficient. I would clone the system drive to another drive and install the clone. On that drive, I would uninstall everything to do with PT9 and all your current plugins. Then install 12 and do a little testing to make sure it runs and sees your interface. Then install the newest versions of all your plugins. Doing this means that you can't screw up your current setup(that is probably running nicely). I'm a firm believer in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". But I am also a firm believer in trying the latest(so I ALWAYS have a backup plan)

I doubt it considering PT12 wants a minimum of OSX 10.8.5 and PT9.0.5 added public beta support for OSX 10.7.x

I figured I would try, I’ve heard somebody has had success…just not supported.

I’m on 10.8.5, HD9.06 works great with it although I realize it’s not officially supported, that’s why I’m thinking of taking the chance & trying.

Thanks for the replies.

One of the things you're going to run into is what PT10 users run into when using anything newer than OSX 10.9.x and that is blank insert menus until you hover over them. Not to mention even installing PT9 on a new OSX. And whatever you do do NOT use Migration Assassin (Assisstant) to bring programs over; it's only good for data and nothing more.

Yeah, I tried Sierra and the one before it and had the blank inserts menu thing, thanks. I'm not looking to go up for PT HD 9, just seeing if 12 will work on this rig with 10.8.5. I figure I'll take a chance on a month I guess...or not. :)

Before you do that make a clone of your working system so when, not if, but when your system takes a dump you can recover and get back to work with little time lost. Aggravating - yes but having the clone sure beats being down.
