Using 002R Interface as A/D/A for HD Rig?
I'm in a bind here guys. I'm currently on the touring on the road with a small HD rig (HD2 with one 192 I/O). We're taking a break for a quick small recording session, but I need just a couple more ins and outs. One of the guys has a 002R with him. Is there any chance we can use the A/D/A portion of the 002R only, and route that into the 192 I/O through the lightpipe I/O?

Re: Using 002R Interface as A/D/A for HD Rig?
If you don't already use more than 8 inputs on your HD interface, then sure, you can get additional 8 inputs via lightpipe. Every HD interface is capable of 16 inputs. You just have to make sure the LE interface locks to your HD clock, otherwise you only get digital distortion. And because 002 does not have wordclock i/o, you have two options:
1) transfer clock via lightpipe (connect two cables between the systems instead of one) 2) set LE interface as clock master, then slave your HD system to incoming lightpipe. Personally, I'd never use LE system as a master clock.

I'm pretty sure that you can't just plug this in and go. The 002R lacks a standalone mode, so make sure you're running another computer with LE in order to route the 002 inputs to the 002 ADAT outputs. As mentioned, just make sure the clocking is all set.

Re: Using 002R Interface as A/D/A for HD Rig?
I remember the old MIX hardware, at least the 888 anyway, had a stand-alone mode for use with other systems. I was afraid I would need to rig up my 002R to another computer and then lock the two systems. I've never tried hooking up an LE interface with lightpipe. But because it has no stand-alone mode, there's nothing telling the incoming/outgoing audio to head down the fiber-optic freeway. Instead, it's directly routed to the FireWire connection. And I'm sure this output signal is smothered with Digi's own proprietary format that only ProTools sees, so that means no reverse engineering. I don't have everything on my hands just yet, so I'm not sure how this might work. If anyone has tried, let us know!
If push comes to shove, I might just have to buy another interface. An old 888 hooked up to the Legacy port would be lovely. I could buy another 8-channel D/A card for the 192 I/O, but another 888 interface would be much cheaper. Which is fine. It's just for a cue mix. |
