Default Playback Settings In 2018

O.K. I've taken the plunge!

I'm seeing new behaviour in 2018. These are some combinations I'm trying in the "Playback Engine" dialogue, in response to this.

The example cited is a three-minute song. The only soft-synth onboard is Superior Drummer 3, and that is inactive, for the purposes of this test.

Is anyone else seeing this type of thing? The system specs are in the signature.

Thanx!

may i ask .. what is the question exactly ?? do you think PT is using too much Memory ??

does the same thing happen if SD3 is NOT on a track at all ?? i assume it would be different but i should ask ..

how many other tracks are there, and what kind, audio, aux, etc ..

hoping we can get a little more info that will reveal something ..

thank you john

I'm really missing the OP's point. It's working exactly as it should:

You increased the Disk cache size and the memory usage went up (because duh, that's where the disk cache is formed from) and the disk cache percentage went down by 1/2 (because, once again you doubled the disk cache.) Were you expecting something else to happen?

As for the hardware buffer, the plugin is inactive. Nothing is happening. Buffer will change nothing in this case. And hardware buffers don't relate directly to RAM memory -- it's packeting to the audio card.

not missing the OP's point at all .. i am fishing for more info from the OP so we have more to go on, but MOSTLY to see what he knows about his system and how it is operating, might come to his own conclusions ..

i been using PT since ver3 - lots of experience .. sorry if i go about things a little differently than some others .. i might back into it in other words ..

and i agree with what you are saying .. lets see what the OP says before you and i go back and forth ..

Sorry, that was an "I'm missing the OP's point" -- not in reference to you, John1192.

Corrected for clarity.

Sorry about the ambiguous/incomplete information, folk!

The highest the memory usage indicator has ever gone is 48% in V12, and the disk cache meter has never shown itself before. I have never had to fiddle with these settings.

Actually, I posted this question before, but the thread seems to have disappeared.

What I'm wondering is, if 2018 is fatter and/or greedier, causing these new readings to show up.

could be a bit more of a HOG !! a PIG !! a Sloth of Sorts ..

and you should be set on Normal unless you find yourself needing the Disk Cache to be higher ..

also: any other tracks in this session, Audio, Aux, etc ???

Only the audio files shown in the clip list. No reverbs or anything. I'm setting up from scratch. I was just about to convert the drums to audio, in preparation for the mix, when I noticed the readings. Superior Drummer was made inactive, for the test.

ok, you didn't even say what you were worried about in the OP.. but finally i guess you are talking about memory usage?

Can you do me a favour, it will only take a second, and completely remove superior drummer and see if memory is released? Just in case for some reason it is not being released with being made inactive.

I have a new project here.. my disk cache set to 1GB.. a few audio tracks.. no big sample VI's, and memory is no where near yours.. we have the same 16gb ram on a macbook pro. Mine shows 18% used on the PT meter.

It's just got to be the drummer, it's the only thing that makes sense.

When you say inactive, do you mean you have bypassed it or literally made the entire track inactive?

Will do some tests myself with some big sample based VI's and see if inactivating releases memory.. never thought to check that before
