  • 1TB internal SSD, OWC Accelsior 4M2 PCIe storage (4x1TB) – this works out approximately the same price as above, and does not have a fan
  • 1TB internal SSD, Sonnet M2 4x4 PCIe storage (2x2TB) – this is more expensive, but expandable [1] and potentially faster depending on how it is populated [2]

[1] can't seem to buy the OWC card unpopulated here and the 4TB option uses 4x1TB SSDs
[2] the OWC card is a x8 PCIe card, the Sonnet card is x16, but this is moot given way I intend to populate it
I'm also trying to figure out which avenue to go down because there's the internal nand SSD's that are connected to the T2 chip that can't be mirrored/removed/replaced without sending to Apple.

Or, invest in the smallest usable one, on the theory that if it fails it will be less annoying to replace if it contains nothing but the operating system and applications. (Although I guess, given you need to take it into the Apple Store anyway it would be a pain either way...)

According to the business guy at my local Apple store the coronavirus has hit production of Mac Pros. Delivery time has gone out to a month. Mac Pros for markets outside the US are completely made in China apparently.

The Pegasus J2i looks like a handy addition. 8TB spinner for backups and I don’t see why you couldn’t add a SSD in an adapter for Pro Tools sessions. It doesn’t use up a PCIe slot.
Edit: I’m wondering if one of these would work in the J2i. It would need a 3.5” adapter of course:

In my case I’ll be adding a Sonnet M.2 4x4 (they’re back ordered too it seems) or the OWC equivalent for sample streaming.

If anyone has the Sonnet M.2 4x4 could you comment on how noisy the fan is?

If I am understanding correctly , I would probably mirror what I have in current MP. Which means I would order it with a 500 GB SSD Apple installed boot dive ( 256 is doable but I am already at about 230 GB on my boot drive) and then get two third party PCIe SS'D (likely get a 1 TB for PT session storage and 2 TB for FCPX storage)

500 isn’t currently and option. Go for at least the 1TB.

Honestly, the 2TB option is. Great deal for only $400 more.

For North American customers yes, but for international customers they are assembled in China. Source here.

Apple just posted a Mac Pro technology overview which may be of interest to readers here.

To anyone who already have/own a Mac Pro Rack version:

I would be forever grateful, if you could find the width and height of the Mac Pro Rack version. I am not talking about the outer dimensions of the front plate (which is listed on Apple's website) but the dimensions (height and width) of the case itself.

Apple has been giving me the run-around on the phone today with no one being able to answer such a simple question.

Thanks in advance

Good catch I had just assumed if 256 was the start 500 would be the next logical option In that case I would opt for the 1 TB. since I would likely be getting two PCIe SSD's for one for PT sessions and one for FCPX projects

OR is having the PT sessions on a separate drive from the boot drive no longer considered standard practice advisable ?
