Default UAD Apollo w/ iMac 10,1 + Pro Tools HD 9 -6101 error!?

Hi there,

I'm hoping someone can help.

Recently I have moved into a new studio share with a friend where I would like my Apollo to be used on his iMac (w/ Pro Tools HD 9) in replacement of the Digidesign 003 he was using prior to my arrival. I have been using the Apollo with a variety of Mac/Pro Tools based systems since 2012 and it has up until now been incredibly reliable.

The full specs of the iMac and Pro Tools are as follows:

iMac 10,1 (late-2009)
3.06gHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
8GB Ram
512GB SSD hard drive
Snow Leopard 10.6.8
Pro Tools HD version 9.0.6

Sessions seems to play fine upon first playback but around a minute or so into playing I will get a -6101 cpu overload message. This never happened using the studio's old Digi 003 interface. Looking at the Pro Tools CPU monitor, there are no spikes in % and it all seems to be running low so it doesn't make any sense why this error is occurring. We have tried reinstalling the UAD software but that did not work. To double check it is not the actual Apollo I have used it with my 2010 Macbook Pro system and it works perfectly so it must be something to do with the Pro Tools software? I'm pretty sure the iMac is high enough spec to handle it...

If anyone has any ideas they would be much appreciated.

Thanks so much.

Although you actually didn´t say which model of Apollo you are trying to use, all 3 versions of Apollo (Twin series, -older-Firewire unit,
-new-Thunderbolt units) seem to share the same requirements which are...no earlier Mac OS X than Mountain Lion 10.8.5!
So, if I get it right, you cannot use an Apollo interface with Snow Leopard 10.6.8. obviously. Check it out there (system requirements).

Same for all. You may scroll down for further details e.g. at the Firewire models.

And there is another problem.
Pro Tools HD 9.0.6 was only compatible with Mac OS X Snow Leopard or Lion, with no later OS X. Check it out there again.

So actually the Apollo is the problem as it is not compatible with either Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and with PTHD 9.0.6 as this version
of Pro Tools will not run on the earliest Mac OS X the Apollo would need at least.
Unlike the 003 which works perfectly fine with 10.6.8 as well as PTHD 9.0.6 which runs flawlessly on Snow Leopard.

I assume you have used another, more recent system with Apollo so it has worked well so far. However his system is too old for the Apollo actually.

All the best.

Hi VRW,

Thank you for your reply, it is much appreciated. Apologies about not listing the Apollo type.. It is the earliest firewire version (8 I/O). My post was mostly copy and pasted from one I sent to UA support which had all the details on.

Another thing I failed to mention mention is that I am using UAD software version 7.3 (not 8) since that will run on Snow Leopard with the Apollo. The full details are listed here in the software archives - http://www.uaudio.com/support/uad/archives.html

"(Mac) Apollo DUO/QUAD/FireWire (silver) v6.1.1 and higher"

"10.6 Snow Leopard v7.3.0 and lower"

SO in theory it should be working. I heard back from UA support today and they confirmed that there are no known problems with this iMac and pretty much just said to reinstall the software. They did mention that when you 'uninstall' the software, there are still preferences and settings stored on the computer which you have to manually delete in the library, otherwise its not fully uninstalled. (could be useful for other people with UAD problems). We are going to try that today and will report back. We are also going to try a complete reinstall of Pro Tools to see if that will help.

Thanks again.
