Default Pro Tools 12 and SSL Nucleus interface issues

Hi. I'm not sure how many people are using a Nucleus with Pro Tools, but recently (since installing 12.5) I lose my HUI connection.

The Nucleus will respond to keyboard and DAW commands (solo, play, record, etc will show in the Nucleus) but it will not TRANSMIT anything.

This happens usually after a few minutes of use. It's almost like it just stops transmitting data over the Ethernet (MIDI over Ethernet)

I have tried the Nucleus with Studio One (getting tempted to go there for good!) and don't have this problem.

SSL can't work it out - has anyone here seen anything like this? Even on other controllers perhaps (SSL uses the HUI protocol, using iPMIDI).

Thanks! Mick.

Update. I still have this issue (driving me crazy! Anyone want to buy a Nucleus?)

I rolled back to PT 12.4, and then 11.3, and still have this problem. I also optimized my Windows 7 PC (per the Sweetwater recommendations).

I also changed Cat 5 cables, and even installed an Intel 1Gbit network card. Same issue..

BUT.... I then had it running on Studio One for hours, with no issues. Not sure what to do, but I am now suspicious of Pro Tools (and I don't want to have to pay them money for tech support because I had it for the last year, and they never once fixed other issues I had.... just made things worse, actually)/

(By the way - I know I will probably get slammed for these PT comments, but I will live with it.....! I really don't want to waste the $1,000's I have spent on PT and upgrades, but may be forced to move to another DAW )

ANOTHER UPDATE:

Hi. Well, just in case anyone DOES ever have this problem, I have not resolved it yet, but at least I now know that I am not alone!

I went back to SSL, and they ran PT12.4 under Windows 7 on a Dell Latitude. They had exactly the same problem that I so!

There is no 'fix' yet, but at least I feel better that I am not totally crazy!

So, it seems to be a Pro Tools / Windows 7 combined issue. I'm thinking about upgrading to Windows 10, to further test the issue... though deferring for now! I cannot imagine what issues Windows 10 will bring!

I'll send another update if I EVER get to the root of this.

Thanks, Mick.

Hi Mick,

Thanks for posting. Did you ever figure your issue out?

I thought I was alone, but apparently not--I have the exact same problem. The Nucleus will respond to ProTools, but I can't get it to send commands to it. I thought it was a Windows 10 issue, but apparently it's a Pro tools 12.x issue.

My Nucleus works just fine with Ableton.

I know the op said he tried a new Ethernet cable but here is a suggestion: if the original cables that are being used are straight cables can you try a crossover Ethernet cable and see how that works? Would be worth a shot.

Anyone else with SSL Nucleus and or Matrix2?

Is this confined to Windows/ProTools only or Mac as well?

Anyone ask if the SSL-Delta protocol could be implemented in the future?
(To get around HUI like in the Duality/AWS series)

I've been giving a good look at the SSL Matrix2 options.

BTW
HUI via USB/Mackie is working here on a Mac. OSX.11.5 / PT's HD 12.5.2

I'm with a Matrix and PT12.4. on Mac OS X 10.10.5. No problem here. Using it every day with PT and Logic.

Did you guys do a correct installation of the IP midi software? Did you select the correct ports in PT for IP midi In and Out?

Hi. Thanks for the feedback. Yes... I correctly installed and set up IP midi. I have even tried setting up just ports 3&4 and 5&6. No fix.

I also installed the legacy IP midi....still not resolved.

I have been trying to find an alternative to IP midi...but not found anything. Of course, that is a long shot anyway.

Something...has to be randomly opening an IP address, or something similar, that is disabling the Nucleus or pro tools LAN connection / address, yet I have disabled all wake features and any other potential Ethernet link (wifi, wireless printer, home network... Even Avid application manager).

As you can imagine... I put a lot of time into this... And never into music any more 😒😒

Thanks, Mick.

I'm going to try this. Long shot, but worth it! Thanks.

Default Re: Pro Tools 12 and SSL Nucleus interface issues

I've had this same issue for over a year which has led to me leaving my Nucleus turned off. The Nucleus would lose communication at some point during every session which would eventually lead to a force close of PT's because PT would hang when trying to close the program after the Nucleus would lose communication.

I think I recently found the fix:

http://www2.solidstatelogic.com/stud...l1-7#&panel1-7

The fix on a Windows 7 machine is to make sure and run PT with "Administrator level privileges". I made this change roughly five days ago and my Nucleus has not lost communication once since this change. SSL outlines how to make this change in the above link.

Follow the link to the FAQ page on SSL's Nuclues troubleshooting page. The section is titled:

"Why is Pro Tools not communicating with my SSL control surface in Windows 7?"

I hope this helps.
