Are you sure about that?

You can buy used 2009 8 Core for around $600, spend another $300 on two 6 Core CPU's, then around $200.00 for faster RAM. Then you have a MacPro that you don't have to hassle yourself with dealing with OSX upgrades, that has a Geekbench over 25K. Which is second to only the fastest current TrashCan!

I agree with you Barry, however this has not always been the case.

When I built my Hack the 2009's were still in the $1500/1800 ish depending on the stock config.

And the 2010's were above $2k

Now maybe its financially feasible, but this has not always been the case

No doubt, heck, I just figured this out a month or so ago..........But today, it's a game changer, especially if you can find a 2009 8 Core....

These prices are very different to what they were when I looked into upgrading my MP 1,1. I agree that if all you want is a hassle-free upgrade this is a good option.

There are, however, many more benefits to having a Hackintosh which I would not want to be without now - like USB3, hot swappable SATA ports, 7 PCIe slots amongst many others.

This is a of course a personal preference as my rig perfectly fits my requirements. Everybody has different needs but for me having gone down the Hackintosh route has been a real eye-opener.

I started this thread for a specific reason and would like to keep it on topic:

Building a (modern day) Hackintosh for Pro Tools HD 10.x (PCIe).

Let's not turn it into a Hackintosh vs. second hand Mac Pro comparison thread.

I have updated my original post with the components list of my Hackintosh for reference.

Fair enough.... Actually I was planning on building a Hackintosh.

What motherboard has 7 PCIe slots for TDM cards, very interested in that!

To my knowledge no motherboard has 7 PCI slots. The most you can get is a jetway board with 4. Any more than that and you will need an expansion chassis from Magma :)

I just got the last piece to put my Hackintosh together this weekend.

I am building a system based on a Gigabyte GA-P75-D3 motherboard. It has 4 PCI slots, 1 PCIEx16, 1 PCIEx4, and 1 PCIEx1 slot. It also has USB 3.0!

I'm putting in an i7 3.8Ghz, 32G memory, 240G SSD, 1T Data drive.

I've got a PCIX Core, Process, and 2 Accel cards to run 10HD on so I should be set for a couple of years.

Nice, the first time is always the hardest

10.9.5 is showing no issues with your PT10HD setup is it?

How much disk cache do you have setup for the system? Just curious

And Jetway is PCI-x iirc

My build is PCIe - I updated my first post with the components list. The MoBo I am using does indeed have 7 PCIe slots. You will need one of them for a GPU of course which means you can install a maximum of six HD cards.

Since I have a Magma chassis already I have no immediate need to run all the HD cards inside the computer - but I like to know that I could if the Magma blew up for example. I am toying with the idea of getting a UAD card at some point.

10.9.5 is working like a charm for me with no issues I can attribute to the OS.

Disk Cache is currently set to 32GB which I am nowhere near of reaching even on large tracking sessions, before purging unused playlists, etc.

I looking to see if anyone has built an HD4 rig using a Fractal Design Define R4 case. Not sure from pics I've seen online if the 4th PCI card will fit in lower 7th slot with 3 hdd cage below it.

Thanks in advance!
