PCIe slot question for HD Accel

Looking at a new Windows 7 machine.

Since there are several PCIe slot notations (ie x1, x8, x16, etc)

What is the compatible PCIe slot for HD Accel cards?

Some PC motherboards have a mix of slots. Do they all have to be the same?
