Whenever you create a new session, you get the option of where to save your new session to. Choose the external drive to create/save session, and that's where it records to.

I've never used USB drives so can't help with specs I'm afraid.

The important detail that I would point out is to make sure you are getting a real and honest 7200 rpm drive, and not some "green" drive that may spin down or have some other "power saving" feature. You might even consider buying a raw drive like a WD Caviar Black, from newegg.com and grabbing a USB 2/3 drive case. You might also check with HP as some laptops can actually accommodate a second internal drive(and there are several 7200 rpm 2.5" drives on the market)

BTW, if your laptop has an eSATA port, that will give the best performance

What are some good enclosures for that Caviar Black that has USB 2., Firewire, and eSATA that also has shock protection?

Though, I guess USB 2 really wouldn't be needed since I've at least got Firewire on all my computers.
