Default Issues with Eleven Rack and PT 11

Hi Everyone,

I upgraded to Pro Tools 11 last week, and everything appeared to working fine. Today I went in to record a guitar track using my Eleven Rack, and experienced an issue.

Normally, when I start up Pro Tools, no guitar playback from the 11R will be audible unless I arm one of the tracks where the 11R is set as the input. However, in Pro Tools 11, when I start up the program, I can still hear guitar playback even if no tracks are armed for recording. The odd thing is that at this point audio is only coming out of my left monitor, or left headphone speaker. If I do set a track to be armed for recording (one that is panned 100% right for example), I still hear the playback through the left monitor, but also hear the record armed track through the right monitor. The most annoying part of this is that when I do begin recording, I can hear playback from both Left & right, when it should be panned 100% right.

If I launch PT 10 instead of 11, everything functions normally where I don't hear any Eleven Rack guitar playback unless the track is armed for recording.

Anyone else experience this, or any ideas how to fix this?

What is the playback engine set to in Pro Tools 11?

It needs to be "Eleven Rack" not say "Aggregate Audio" or anything else.

Try defaulting all input, output and bus IO. Go to Setup>IO and click default on each page.

Reboot the computer, try again.

Try trashing prefs and try starting with a new empty session.

What exact computer (hopefully not really a Core 2 Duo... but even if it is that is not necessarily the issue) , OS X and driver version? etc. etc. start at the "Help us Help You - READ THIS Before Posting!" link above on this DUC page.

And Pro Tools 10 and 11 coinstalled... likely not the issue, but for other reasons hopefully you have carefully followed the coinstall instructions/requirements.

Thanks for the reply Darryl.

The playback engine is set to Eleven Rack. I had tried defaulting the input, output and bus IO's, and had rebooted but the problem was still there.

After trashing prefs, I tried again and it is now working correctly in both PT 10 & PT 11.

And the system info I had on my profile was not accurate. I'm now using a Windows laptop with a Core i5 & 8GB of RAM.

Thanks for the tips.

So this issue has returned today, and I can't seem to fix it.

Since I last posted, I have completely uninstalled PT 10 from my system, as any plugins I use are AAX, and since I thought I had this issue taken care of, there was no need for PT 10 anymore. It worked fine for a few days, and now back to the exact same symptoms I described in the original post. Here's what I have done so far:

Defaulted I/O's - no change
Trashed Prefs & Rebooted - no change
Tried multiple different sessions & a brand new session - no change.
Uninstalled PT 11 & Uninstalled 11R Driver
Installed 11R Driver Version 1.1.9
Installed PT 11.3 - no change
Created a new Windows User ID - no change

Does the Eleven Rack show up as the playback engine and work Ok when you just play back audio though it?

if so I would try a reinstall of Pro Tools 11. If that does not fix it reinstall Windows and all the apps etc.

If not I'd suspect the USB cable, USB port, driver or hardware.

Eleven Rack does show up as the playback engine, and everything sounds fine when playing back audio. When recording it also records fine, its just that the signal from the 11R will always be coming through the left channel while recording in addition to however it is panned in PT. The actual recorded signal is panned as it should be when played back after recording.

I've already uninstalled and reinstalled PT Eleven and the driver. I can try a different USB cable though.

Out of curiosity, I just uninstalled PT 11 completely along with the 11R driver, and then installed PT 10 and installed the 11R Driver 1.1.9. Everything works fine in PT10. As soon as PT starts, there is no audio coming through from the 11R unless I arm a track for recording, and it follows the panning correctly. It seems the issue is isolated to PT 11 with my environment.

Just an update on this issue for anyone that may find this thread in the future.

Per Avid support, this issue is a known issue with Pro Tools 11 when using Windows and an Eleven Rack. I still do find it strange that everything worked fine for a few days before the issue presented itself, but it is what it is. Looks like I'll be forced to use Pro Tools 10 on my Windows system until this issue is fixed.

Anyone else have this issue when using Eleven Rack to record in PT 11 on a Windows system? Avid suggested the workaround to this was to enable Low Latency Monitoring, but this was already enabled on my system.

So is it a done deal that every 11R and PT11 user will suffer from this?

That's Avid's position at this point. Apparently the issue is unique to the Windows platform though, so if you have a Mac, hopefully the issue isn't occurring.

They have cited this knowledge base article as the issue I am experiencing: http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/e...n-Pro-Tools-11

They also acknowledged that this issue can come and go intermittently without apparent cause. The issue has been known to Avid since at least July 1, 2013 (that's when the article was last updated). My hopes aren't high that it will be addressed anytime soon. I'm also concerned if they can't be bothered to fix such a glaring issue with one of their own interfaces if they will even be supporting the 11R with the next version(s) of PT.

I probably wouldn't have upgraded to PT 11 had I found this before upgrading. I did double check the system requirements and the interface requirements before deciding to upgrade. Shame on me for assuming that a Pro Tools 11 Approved interface would work properly. I would think an issue of this significance would at least warrant a note (something to the effect of "this is approved, but you can't monitor tracks properly when recording") on this page: http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/e...nd-Peripherals

I have documented this issue here with a work around that works 99% of the time for me. If it does not work the first time, turn off everything and restart and try again.
