Default Major issues loading Pro Tools 8

Hey all,

I just upgraded my PC, purchased PT 8 & updated to 8.0cs3, and bought a used digi 002. Thought I was making my setup more efficient and stable, but it seems I just created more problems for myself. I'm having serious issues launching Pro Tools- blue screens, DAE 1115 errors, and freezing after DAE loaded. I just can't get past the loading phase after all the plugins load up. I've done just about every optimization and tweak in the "Best Core 2 Desktop" and "General Troubleshooting Guide." There is no IE8 on the pc.

I called digi & the tech seemed to think it's a firewire issue. Had me take out a previous Via PCI card, change ports, etc. I also have a 002 mixer and used different firewire cables so I don't think it's related to the interface. He really had no idea though, and nothing worked. I ordered an ADS Pyro card just in case, but a few members seemed to think the problem may be OS or OC related. Here's the report:

I'm not the most pc savy guy in the world, so I didn't know enough to challenge him on that. I'll get Vista Ultimate if you guys think that will cure all, but I was just trying not to spend too much more on anything that's not gonna fix my issue. So I just wanted to be sure before buying it. 7 is free for a year so I rolled with it. Please help me get this @#$% thing running smoothly!

Its hard to troubleshoot anything running on a untested/unapproved OS. Your not going to like it but I would roll back to Vista 32bit or XP 32bit. I know thats not what you want to hear. Its great to play around and Beta test Win 7 but you also need a baseline/known working system like XP or Vista to compare it to. The Gigabyte board has a TI FW chip and most users have reported good results. The VIA FW chips are very hit and miss-some work and some don't. trying the ADS should eliminate the FW chip as a variable.

You may have some success rolling the FW driver back to the legacy driver. Heres how (I'm not at a Win7 machine and going from memory here so these are a rough guideline) open up the Device manger page. You can get there by pressing Alt+Pausebreak (this will bring up what used to be the system properties page) and select Device Manager from the choices on the left hand pane. Right click the FW adapter and select update driver and "let me choose from a list" with any luck you will see two drivers listed with the top one being Texas Instruments OHCI FW driver and the lower choice will read some thing like "Legacy 1394 OHCI bus driver" Select the legacy driver and close the update dialog boxes. Reboot and make sure that the Legacy driver is the top choice and try launching Pro Tools. Deleting Pres and Data bases would not be a bad idea either. This may solve you DAE 1115 error or it may not. Its probably not going to stop any blues screens, for that I would make sure you have the very latest Pace drivers. If you update the firewire driver and the Pace driver and its still not working I would re install Pro tools as it may not have installed correctly as it may not have read the 002 correctly.

Thats the best I can do. I hope it helps.

Huge thanks to you Sunburst, I'll try installing the legacy driver, uninstalling and reinstalling PT, and will update the PACE drivers (again). If I get the same thing, I'll shell out the $150 for vista business & go from there.

I had a lot of problems with my 003 rack+ on XP Pro when I first got it. When I finally got the Siig Firewire card things improved drastically. Anyway, one problem I had (and still have occasionally) is PT 8cs3 freezing on the DAE Loaded screen. I have no idea if this is the right thing to do, but the only way I get around it is to momentarily power off the 003 and then back on. It goes through loading the MIDI stuff afterwards and I'm able to run PT again. If I cycle the power fast enough I don't even get the "PT cannot communicate with the 003" message, but I really hate cycling the power like that - it can only damage the unit, but what else can be done? I've heard you should NEVER reseat the firewire cable with the power on. Fortunately for me now it usually loads with no problems...

Well thank you too, cwsand. I went ahead and bit the bullet on the OS. Bought Vista Business (w/ the Windows 7 free upgrade of course). I'll have that installed, will optimize, cancel the OC for now, and uninstall and reinstall PT. Then I will return to you all!! Because after dropping $300 in software alone between PT 8 and Vista, another $800 or so in PC hardware, and $400 on my 002, I NEED this to work.

Please be careful not to allow IE8 to install on your new OS.

Thanks. Is there an easy way to make sure that doesn't happen? While installing it? Or to I just have to uninstall after?

If you are going out to buy Vista, try to get a package that came out prior to IE8.

And this may help,

Unhappy Re: Major issues loading Pro Tools 8

Hi Guys!

Just a quick reply: I too am having enormous difficulties with loading PTLE 8.0cs3 with 003 Factory. Basically I have the same problem as cwsand wrote above - the only difference is that I have not yet found a workaround. When I first installed PT (I bought all the equipment new) and encountered these problems I disabled the on-board firewire card and bough the Siig PCIe firewire card which is certified by DigiDesign. I thought that - based on what I have read - that this will solve the issue. It definitely helped ... but it did not clear all the issues. I have Visa 32-bit installed with IE7 and Firefox. If you guys have any ideas what can be done to solve this "stuck on DAE Loaded" screen please post a reply.

Many thanks.

Do you have the latest PACE drivers installed? Have you tried any of the other troubleshooting steps, especially right-clicking on Pro Tools and choosing 'run as administrator'?
