Default PT 8 LE Crash Every Time I Drag File From Workspace About 2 Give UP!!!!!

iMac 2.3GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Mac OS X 10.5.6
4GB 800Mhz DDR2 SDRAM
250GB Internal Mac HD
750GB Iomega External HD
PT8 LE, MBOX2 Mini.

This is really annoying now and i cant figure out why PT 8 LE crashes every time i drag and drop anything into the edit window from workspace.

I have used the pro tools pref and database helper to delete all prefs, database, and volumes folders... heck i deleted the lot. I also went to disk utilities and verified and repaired disk permissions for both my volumes.... So why does this still happen!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Does this not happen for anyone else at all after doing all this

Im almost at the end of this BS its ridiculous!@£$%$£@!!!

this is a serious flaw in the digidesign working... i was singing PT's praises to no end until this started happeneing and now it seems ive uncovered a wealth of problems with this system... the advantages workspace gives u was one of the main reasons i switched to PT8 from cubase... now im starting to think it wasnt such a good idea.

When it crashes - what happens? Do you get an error message? Does it happen when dragging in files from a particular drive (in other words, have you tested bringing in files from both drives, to see if one crashes and the other doesn't)?

Have you verified that ALL installed plug-ins are compatible?

Pro Tools Plug-In Compatibility Grid

Do you have any other devices attached to the computer? Which ports do you have your drives and MB2M connected to? What types of files are you trying to import?

The more info you can provide, the easier it is to troubleshoot. And, fwiw, I cannot reproduce the problem you're describing on the iMac on my desk.

Also, have you updated to cs2 yet?

I used to have that problem in PT 7.4 for PC and I tried everything. I just left the workspace alone and tried alternative methods for doing what workspace did. Haven't tried it in PT8 again cause of what happened in PT7....so no you are not the only one...

You're certainly not the only person who gets this problem. I've been struggling with this one for a long time now (since 7.4). I get this on my 2.8 iMac with a 003R and on my macbook with a variety of LE hardware. All the usual prefs/database/cache/permissions stuff doesn't help. Weirdly I have it working fine on 20 G5s with mbox2s, some macbooks and on a mac pro running HD 7.4.

The only difference between these systems that I can see is that on the misbehaving systems I have the original music production toolkit (as far as I can see I have all the latest versions of the plugins and the CS releases of PT) wheras the others have the MPT2. I'm going to have to level the iMac and start again doing a basic install with no additional plugins as a test system and isolate the problem (lot of work though...).

The specific problem I get is dragging and dropping into the edit window from the workspace browser. I can audition with the conform to tempo button engaged but if I try to drag into PT it will give me a watch, then a beachball and eventually show PT as not responding in the force quit window. I get exactly the same response if I try to drag and drop from Finder.

As a workaround I tend to audition in the workspace browser and then use import audio (which works fine). Its a funny issue as I've only ever seen it on my own personal systems as opposed to the 25 systems I maintain at work.

Anybody else got this issue? If so what plugins and toolkits are you running?

hey thanks for the reply, though it doesnt bode well does it?? id want to say its your tools but?? heres hoping!!

actually thats not my problem, but could be. i had my HDD die and had to be replaced and while at it i thought.., ill just upgrade to lepard, and though a better system i didnt realise i would have to upgrade every bit of production software i have.

LE 7.3 will not work on lepard.., so i have to upgrade.., some have made a lot on this latest consumer deal and some have lost a lot, like myself who was crusing finacually until the HDD went down and hell broke loss.

reeading all this one wonders which is better to get.., LE 7.4 over LE 8.., i read the install for PT8 and theres some serious BACK UP YOUR SYSTEM.., whith more software one has to buy no doubt though i wonder why time machine on laepard wil not work or was not suggested to back up??

it seems i might be up for a free upgrade to 7.4 because i brought this 7.3 after Oct 2007?? but maybe theres fine print because i couldnt fid any download??

cheers.

Hi mate, this may or may not help your cause, but as the above poster stated, I have also had this very same problem, albeit on a PC running XP and PTLE 7.3 (possibly 7.4). When relinking files, dragging and dropping from the workspace, importing files - all caused my computer to crash.

I got to the bottom of it eventually, and it was my graphics card that was causing the problem. I installed an updated driver and all was sorted. Never happened again since.

I know you are using a Mac, but there is a slight possibility that it could be the same cuase.

Hope you get it sorted anyway.
