Default Question about "Electronic Drums"? (V-Dums etc.)

A buddy of mine is looking to spend in the range of $1,300 to $1,500 on some electronic drums. My question is: what are some of his choices in this price range?

Also he has a question of "do the heads/pads ever need to be replaced"? And wants to know how they would be used to play so you could hear them while "jamming" (would he also need a monitor system, do they come with any monitors?)

BTW.. What is the warranty on these things, "1 year"?

I'm clueless...

Thanks!
