Firewire cable for DIGI 003 (really long one)
Hello! This is my first post.
I'm using DIGI 003 control surface and I would like to keep my computer out of my studio. But default cable isn't so long and I bought cable from Unibrain (10 meters long) which doesn't work with my DIGI. Can someone give me an advise for good working, 8-10 meters long cable? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Firewire cable for DIGI 003 (really long one)
Maximum cable length is defined in the Firewire standard as 4.5 meters. www.unibrain.com sells cables which they claim work correctly at 10 meters, due to improved materials and construction. Greater lengths can be achieved using hubs or repeaters.
I'd do some very careful testing before depending on anything over 4.5m.

So you think that if I connect two 4.5 meter cables through firewire repeater than it will work?

Or a hub. Yes, it should work. Maybe somebody here has a recommendation for something they've actually used for a while and found reliable.

Yeah. That would be great. Recommendation based on personal experience. Anyone?

Re: Firewire cable for DIGI 003 (really long one)
This is a comment kindly given to me by DUC member "peppertree" a couple of weeks ago.
Hope it helps. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- That's why you get an active firewire repeater. I got mine from cablemegastore.com for $30 or so, since redco didn't have them. I run my 003 about 30 feet away from my Mac Pro with zero (0) problems. I got big thick DVI extension cables from redco, but it might be cheaper to get long HDMI cables and DVI adapters...not sure if there would be a difference in transmission quality. And redco has the active USB repeater to go alongside the firewire. That's all you need. No isoboxes, no "quiet" fans/drives, just a machine room (any other room that's isolated enough and ventilated enough) and a bit of routing to get four or five cables to and from without noise getting through. About $200 all told. No-brainer. |
